Scientists Find Meteorite Traces in Rajasthan’s Ramgarh Crater

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Baran district Rajasthan exists India’s biggest geological mystery, named as the Ramgarh crater and scientists have been trying to find out details of how this was formed. In the upcoming Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) 2026 scheduled to happen from March 16 to March 20, scientists will disclose clues on the origin of the Ramgarh crater.

For the upcoming Conference researchers have announced that they would be presenting microscopic magnetic particles that they unearthed from the Ramgarh crater, hinting on the asteroid impact. Scientists have even claimed that there is a possibility that they would be able to identify the kind of space rock responsible for the formation of this circular structure that is about 3.5-kilometre-wide.

What is the Ramgarh crater?

This is a circular structure with a raised rim, originated by some impact, however there is very little evidence of meteorite.

In order to investigate the origin, scientists have dug 2 shallow trenches and collected samples. Tiny metallic grains have been separated with the help of a powerful magnets, and its lab testing is being done. Striking findings show that these tiny metallic particles are round, smooth and less than millimetre. As per scientists these particles are called microtektites, these are formed due to extreme heat of a meteorite impact.

What made the finding even more realistic was the chemical composition. Many particles had iron, silicon, and majorly nickel. Nickel is very commonly found in meteorites, and rarely on sandstone rocks. Besides, some metallic grains also had iron minerals, giving a high possibility that it has fragments of meteorite. After years of research these findings are evidence that whatever object struck Ramgarh was rich in iron,  this is strong proof that the Ramgarh crater was formed by a cosmic collision.

This study, presented in the conference, will make Ramgarh as India’s most valuable impact site. This is  like a time capsule which has a lot of valuable information about the Solar System and also information about the objects that have hit Earth over billions of years. More detailed study will reveal details of the crater’s rocks and sediments.
