Sanjay Mishra, after more than thirty years in the Indian film industry, has achieved a significant milestone by winning a National Film Award. The actor received the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of Bhaskar Sinha in the 2024 crime drama ‘Bhakshak.’ The awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu during the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony, which was notably held outside New Delhi for the first time.

Reflections on the Award

Mishra has expressed that receiving such an honour was unexpected. In prior statements, he highlighted his collaboration with actress Bhumi Pednekar in films such as ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ and ‘Bhakshak,’ noting that both projects garnered him significant recognition. He referred to Pednekar as his “lucky charm,” stating that he never anticipated such accolades from the films they worked on together.

The actor reminisced about the moment he discovered he had won the National Award. He began receiving messages prompting him to check the Press Information Bureau (PIB) for the official announcement. Mishra shared that learning about his selection was particularly emotional for him, as his late father had worked at the PIB. He said it was significant to receive this news from an office where his father had served, making the recognition feel even more personal.

According to Mishra, the messages he received motivated him to follow the developments related to the awards closely. The joy of discovering his award through the PIB added to the poignant nature of the occasion.

‘Bhakshak’ and Its Themes

‘Bhakshak,’ directed by Pulkit, was produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment. The film premiered on Netflix on February 9, 2024. The narrative centres on journalist Vaishali Singh, portrayed by Bhumi Pednekar, as she investigates allegations of abuse within a girls’ shelter home in Bihar. Mishra’s character, Bhaskar Sinha, aids her in uncovering the truth behind these allegations.

The film sheds light on themes of corruption, institutional neglect, and the quest for justice. Aditya Srivastava features in the film as Bansi Sahu, a prominent figure associated with the shelter home, while Sai Tamhankar plays the role of police officer Jasmeet Kaur, who also engages in the unfolding investigation.

‘Bhakshak’ stands out not only for its compelling storyline but also for its critique of systemic issues within society. The film has been noted for addressing major socio-political themes, offering audiences a narrative that resonates with real-world challenges.

Recognition at the National Film Awards

The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony recognised a multitude of films and actors for their contributions to Indian cinema. Alongside Mishra’s award, actress Yami Gautam secured the Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in ‘Article 370.’ Additionally, actors Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty received the Best Actor in a Leading Role award, sharing the honour for their respective films ‘Chandu Champion’ and ‘Bramayugam.’
