Residents of Lakhimpur Kheri Wait in Line for Fuel Amid Government Warnings

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 27, residents in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, were seen forming long lines, carrying canisters to purchase fuel. This rush for petrol and diesel came despite a plea from the Central government urging citizens to refrain from panic buying. The surge in consumer anxiety is attributed to a global energy crisis linked to geopolitical tensions, including the conflict between the US and Israel concerning Iran. This situation has triggered a blockade enforced by Tehran on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, where approximately 20 to 25 million barrels are transported every day.

Government Measures to Alleviate Fuel Prices

In an effort to manage the situation, the government announced a reduction in excise duties on fuels. The new measures now set excise duties at Rs 3 per litre for petrol and eliminate them for diesel. Additionally, the windfall tax on diesel exports has been established at Rs 21.5 per litre. These changes aim to provide relief to oil marketing companies, which have been facing financial challenges as crude oil prices continue to escalate. However, the retail prices for petrol and diesel remain unchanged for the time being.

Official Statements on Fuel Supply Stability

The Government of India reassured the public regarding the stability of fuel supplies nationwide. It emphasized that fuel outlets are functioning normally, despite reports of panic buying in specific locations due to circulating rumors. A statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed, “All retail outlets are operating normally across the country,” aiming to mitigate fears associated with supply shortages.

Reassurance from the Ministry of Petroleum

The ministry reiterated its message that there are sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel available at fuel pumps throughout India, urging citizens to disregard misleading information. “There are adequate stocks of petrol and diesel available at all Petrol Pumps in the country,” the Ministry stated, reinforcing its previous advisories against succumbing to panic buying. Furthermore, the government reported that all refineries are functioning at optimal capacities, ensuring a reliable energy supply to meet domestic needs.

Focus on Domestic LPG Production

In a related announcement, domestic production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from refineries is set to be increased to support local consumption. The ministry confirmed that adequate crude inventories are in place, contributing to the efficient operation of all refineries. This proactive approach aims to alleviate any concerns regarding energy shortages and to maintain a stable fuel supply for the public.
