Ravichandran Ashwin Questions Team Selection After Axar Patel’s Absence in India’s Loss to South Africa

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent commentary, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed concerns about the selection choices made for India’s Super 8 match against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Ashwin specifically highlighted the absence of Axar Patel, who is also the vice-captain of the Indian team, drawing attention to a significant partnership Patel had forged with star batter Virat Kohli during last year’s T20 World Cup final against the same opponent.

Washington Sundar Takes the Field

In the match held on February 23 in Ahmedabad, India opted to include Washington Sundar in the playing eleven over Patel. This decision proved detrimental as India faced a 76-run defeat, breaking their 12-match unbeaten streak in the tournament. Sundar struggled during his time on the field, conceding 17 runs in two overs and managing only 11 runs while batting at No. 5, a position that placed him ahead of players like Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube.

A Heavy Defeat for India

This defeat marks India’s second-largest loss by runs in T20 internationals, trailing only behind the 80-run setback against New Zealand in 2019. Furthermore, this game has become a historical low for India in T20 World Cup events, enhancing the gravity of the situation as they now face challenges in qualifying for the semi-finals.

Reflecting on Past Partnerships

Ashwin reminisced about the previous World Cup, where Patel had stepped up in similar circumstances against South Africa. He noted that Patel’s partnership with Kohli had been crucial to their success. “In the last T20 World Cup, Axar had come in when India were in the same situation as they were here. He batted with Virat and made a partnership. Of course, Virat’s experience counted, but Axar was not any less. If you had wickets in hand and some stability after ten overs, India would have chased it down,” Ashwin articulated in a segment on his YouTube channel.

India’s Path to Qualification

Following the defeat, India’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals have become precarious. To keep their hopes alive for a successful title defense, the team must secure victories in their remaining two matches while also maintaining a favorable net run rate. The pressure is mounting as each match becomes critical in the quest to reclaim the championship.
