“Ram Rajya Arrived In West Bengal”: Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar

The CSR Journal Magazine

BJP’s Union Minister and former West Bengal President Sukanta Majumdar celebrated the party’s significant majority in the assembly elections on May 4, 2023, declaring that “Ram Rajya” has arrived in West Bengal. Reports indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 191 out of 294 assembly seats, according to the Election Commission’s trends as of 2:30 pm.

Party workers gathered at their office in Kolkata to distribute snacks, notably ‘jhalmuri’, and celebrate the electoral success. As part of the festivities, a party worker made remarks regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s grassroots connection with citizens, contrasting this with the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) leadership.

According to the worker, the response from the public signifies a clear message against TMC’s standing, saying, “Common people of the state have given her a befitting reply,” in reference to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress Faces Defeat

The Trinamool Congress is reportedly facing a major setback, leading in only 96 seats, which signals a potential end to its political dominance in West Bengal. BJP West Bengal President Samik Bhattacharya expressed confidence that a “people’s government” will soon be established.

In his interactions with the media, Bhattacharya stated, “TMC’s current political system has ended,” emphasising that a new government aligned with the public’s interests is on the horizon. This shift is considered significant in the state’s political landscape.

The assembly elections in West Bengal have seen record-breaking voter participation. Phase-II recorded a remarkable turnout of 91.66%, while Phase-I had a slightly higher turnout of 93.19%. This brings the overall voter turnout for the elections to an impressive 92.47%.

Historical Context of the Election Results

In the previous West Bengal Assembly election held in 2021, the TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, achieved a commanding victory with 213 seats out of 294, securing approximately 48 per cent of the vote share. Meanwhile, the BJP emerged as the main opposition party, winning 77 seats with nearly 38 per cent of the votes, a significant improvement from its previous standings. The Left-Congress alliance did not secure any seats in that election.

The recent developments in the assembly elections indicate a shift in voter sentiment and have been marked by celebrations among BJP supporters. Slogans such as ‘Jai Shree Ram’ were raised outside the residence of Mamata Banerjee as a display of triumph for the BJP following the counted votes.

The significant increase in voter engagement points to an evolving political dynamic in West Bengal, as both regional and national parties recalibrate their strategies in light of the results.
