Rajkot Set to Develop Sports Complex, Convention Centre, Housing, and Lion Safari Park

The CSR Journal Magazine

Under the vision of ‘Viksit Gujarat to Viksit Bharat’, the Government of Gujarat is advancing multiple infrastructure projects aimed at the comprehensive development of cities throughout the state. In Rajkot, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) is actively working on a range of initiatives intended to enhance the ‘Ease of Living’ for its residents. Upcoming developments will introduce new facilities including a sports complex, a water filtration plant, and a lion safari park.

International-Standard Sports Complex

The RMC is developing a modern sports complex in Ward No. 17, aligning with the Urban Development Year 2025 initiative. Designed to cater to various Olympic and Commonwealth Games sports, this facility aims to provide international-level infrastructure. Upon completion, it is expected to serve athletes from Rajkot and the broader Saurashtra region, facilitating high-quality training opportunities in a competitive environment.

Affordable Housing Initiatives

To address housing needs, the RMC is nearing the completion of 1,010 Economically Weaker Section (EWS II) housing units in the Railnagar area, with an investment exceeding Rs 119 crore. These housing units will feature rooftop solar panels, water supply networks, drainage systems, and dedicated gas pipelines. Additional amenities such as auto door lifts, rainwater harvesting systems, emergency generator sets, fire safety setups, and a children’s play area are also included. The project has been designed to be inclusive, with plans for an anganwadi and a shopping centre.

Development of a Convention Centre

Rajkot, recognized as an industrial center in Saurashtra, is set to benefit from the construction of a modern convention centre. This facility is being developed with financial support from both the Central and State Governments. As part of urban enhancements, a working women’s hostel is also underway in the Smart City area, with an investment of Rs 49 crore.

Water Supply and Filtration Projects

To ensure the availability of potable water, RMC is implementing a 50 million litres per day (MLD) filtration plant in Nyara. This facility will include an underground storage facility capable of holding 34.272 million litres, as well as a pumping station, which is currently being constructed. Additionally, new water storage solutions are being developed in the Madhapar area, comprising a 24.19 ML Ground Service Reservoir and a 3 ML Elevated Service Reservoir, funded at Rs 31.75 crore.

Tourism Development: Lion Safari Park

Focusing on tourism and wildlife conservation, the RMC is expediting the development of the Lion Safari Park. The project has seen the completion of necessary infrastructure, including a perimeter wall and a five-meter high chain-link fence for safety. Besides, facilities such as animal night shelters, internal roads for park navigation, and access routes outside the park have been established. This initiative is intended to make the Lion Safari Park a new attraction for residents.

Ongoing Urban Development Projects

The Gujarat government continues to commit resources towards the transformation of Rajkot through various development initiatives, which include facilities such as Atal Sarovar, AIIMS, an international airport, and multiple flyovers. These extensive projects are part of a broader effort to elevate the standard of living for urban residents, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing local quality of life.
