In his remarks, the Chief Minister highlighted the significance of the excise duty reduction on fuel prices, which has lowered petrol duty from ₹13 to ₹3 per liter and eliminated diesel duty to zero. He characterized this decision as commendable and vital for enhancing the economic strength of families across India while minimizing their exposure to global market uncertainties. Sharma urged citizens to remain united and avoid succumbing to rumors amidst the current challenges faced by the country.

Context of the Tax Adjustment

The adjustments in excise duties align with a Gazette notification issued under the Central Excise Act, 1944. The decision emerges in response to rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. These events have led to blockages in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supply that accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world’s crude oil transportation. Prior to these developments, India had sourced 12-15% of its oil imports through this critical maritime passage.
