Rahul Gandhi Slams Narendra Modi Over US Trade Deal, Says It Hurts National Interests

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has launched a pointed attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the recently proposed trade deal framework with the United States. Gandhi accused the central government of compromising national interests, asserting that it has effectively “sold out the country.” His statements come in response to the BJP’s characterization of a protest by the Indian Youth Congress at the AI Impact Summit as “shameful.”

Allegations of Complicity and Economic Impact

In a video message, Gandhi claimed that the trade deal is disgraceful, stating, “Modi ji, do you talk about shame? Let me tell you what shame is. Your name, your minister’s, and your friend’s name appearing together in the Epstein files, being linked to such a vile criminal—this is shameful. The trade deal you’ve made with America, in which you’ve sold out the country—this is shameful. You’ve handed over our country’s data. You’ve wiped out the farmers. You’ve ruined the textile industry—this is shameful.”

Commitment to Protest

Gandhi expressed solidarity with party members and reiterated that the Congress Party would not back down on this issue. He remarked, “The entire country knows that the ongoing case against Adani in America has kept you up at night—because it’s a case against the BJP and your financial architecture. For 14 months, no action has been taken on it—this is shameful. Modi ji, you do whatever you deem appropriate for your friends Anil Ambani, Adani, and yourself. The lion-hearted warriors of the Congress Party and I will continue to defend the country—we won’t retreat even an inch.”

Congress Critique of the Trade Framework

The Congress Party has voiced strong opposition to the framework of the India-US trade deal, particularly after India agreed to eliminate or reduce tariffs on a broad range of American goods. This includes industrial products as well as various food and agricultural items, such as dried distillers’ grains, red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, and alcoholic beverages.

Protests at AI Impact Summit

As part of their protest, members of the Indian Youth Congress displayed their dissent at the Bharat Mandapam venue during the Al Impact India Summit in New Delhi. The youth activists stripped off their shirts to reveal messages that read “Compromised PM.” Following this act of protest, seven leaders from the Youth Congress were apprehended by authorities.

Reactions to US Tariffs

In light of the trade deal framework, the United States announced an 18 percent tariff on Indian goods. However, a ruling by the US Supreme Court overruled certain tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. Subsequently, the US President implemented a new global tariff level of 15 percent, which took effect immediately.
