Rahul Gandhi Slams Delhi Police For Mistreating Women and Media

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha and a prominent member of the Congress party, has made serious allegations against the Delhi Police concerning their treatment of women protesters and female journalists during recent events in the city. He expressed his concerns on social media, stating that many individuals had been detained at Jantar Mantar, a site known for protest activities.

According to Gandhi, female protesters have accused male police officers of inappropriate behaviour. This situation has raised alarm regarding the treatment of women who exercise their right to protest and raise questions regarding law enforcement practices in the national capital. Gandhi’s remarks aimed to highlight a pattern of behaviour he believes silences women seeking to voice their concerns.

In a detailed account, he alleged that cameras belonging to female journalists were forcibly taken by the police, and some journalists even faced physical aggression during these encounters. Notably, he pointed out that no First Information Report (FIR) was filed in response to the complaints made by one journalist, underscoring a perceived lack of accountability within the police force.

Connection to Previous Incidents of Violence

Gandhi also referenced a prior incident involving two women, Shaheen and Nafisa, who had reported experiences of violence and mistreatment while in custody at the Saket police station. He emphasised the irony that such misconduct allegedly occurred in a police station, which is meant to be a place where victims can seek refuge and justice.

He stated, “A few weeks ago, Shaheen and Nafisa recounted their experiences of violence and mistreatment inside the Saket police station. Think about it—inside the station, the very place where women go to file complaints.” This comment illustrated his concerns about the safety and treatment of women by those sworn to protect them.

In his statements, Gandhi argued that the behaviour of police officers during these incidents raises critical questions regarding the efficacy of police mechanisms designed to assist women approaching law enforcement. He asserted that those tasked with safeguarding women appear to present a threat instead.

Demands for Accountability and Transparency

In light of the allegations, Gandhi called for a thorough investigation, demanding that all CCTV footage from the Saket police station be made available to the public. He insisted that action must be taken against any police personnel found guilty of misconduct, emphasising the necessity for transparency and accountability within the police force.

“The entire CCTV footage from the Saket police station should be made public. Immediate action must be taken against the guilty police officers,” he stated. Additionally, he sought justice for Shaheen, Nafisa, and other individuals who, according to his claims, have faced police brutality or disrespect.

Gandhi concluded his remarks by addressing Union Home Minister Amit Shah directly, posing the question: “Mr. Amit Shah—why are you and your police so afraid of women?” This rhetorical inquiry was intended to shed light on the perceived inadequacies in the Delhi Police’s response to protests and women’s rights.

The claims made by Rahul Gandhi come against a backdrop of increasing political scrutiny regarding the conduct of police during protests in Delhi. The veracity of the allegations concerning detentions, misbehaviour, and the failure to register complaints will require official confirmation from the Delhi Police and their associated records.
