Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, recently paid homage to Chhatrapati Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj at AISSMS College in Pune on August 22. This tribute took place in anticipation of the Congress party’s ‘Chhatron ki Goonj’ event dedicated to empowering girls and women across the nation.

Upon his arrival in Pune, Gandhi took to social media platform X, mentioning “Girl Power Ft. Pune,” indicating his focus on women’s issues during the event. His presence aims to highlight the significance of female empowerment in different spheres of society.

Focus on Women’s Empowerment

Congress leader Alka Lamba addressed the gathering, stating that the programme is specifically aimed at the “daughters of the nation.” She alleged that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) governments have made repeated attempts to halt the event’s permissions, expressing her concerns regarding their commitment to women’s rights.

Lamba pointed out that simple slogans such as ‘Vande Mataram’ do not adequately tackle pressing issues like paper leaks, rampant unemployment, inflation, women’s safety, and the difficulties faced by farmers. The focus of the event aims to shed light on these essential social challenges while providing a platform for discussions surrounding women’s rights.

National President of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Vinod Jakhar, highlighted the participation of thousands of young women from Pune and various regions in Maharashtra during the event. This significant turnout suggests a growing awareness and demand for addressing the rights and issues concerning women in contemporary society.

Allegations of Violence at Student Gathering

In a related incident, Vinod Jakhar reported that NSUI activists faced violence from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members the day prior. The altercation reportedly occurred when NSUI activists engaged with students over pertinent matters such as increased fees and delays in scholarships.

According to Jakhar, students expressed their opinions through video statements, which subsequently gained traction online. The situation escalated when ABVP members approached the activists, pressuring them to retract their statements. Their refusal allegedly led to an attack, resulting in injuries and hospitalisations among some students.

Jakhar further noted that cases had been filed against NSUI activists following the confrontation. This incident underscored the volatile nature of student politics and the challenges faced by organisations advocating for student rights within the educational sector.
