Rahul Gandhi Discusses Women’s Rights and Manusmriti’s Norms

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, addressed the issue of women’s rights during a youth outreach programme on Saturday. He emphasised that women are autonomous individuals who do not belong to their fathers, husbands, or sons. Gandhi condemned the Manusmriti, which asserts that women must remain under male authority throughout their lives, terming these norms as shameful.

During his speech at the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event, Gandhi stated, “India’s greatest strength is the 70 crore unique journeys, unique imagination, and unique dreams of its women.” His remarks sought to inspire women to realise their self-worth and assert their independence.

The former President of the Indian Youth Congress encouraged women to embrace their individuality. He quoted the Manusmriti, which specifies that a woman must serve her father in childhood, her husband in youth, and her sons in later life, highlighting these views as outdated and unacceptable.

Encouraging Youth to Express Themselves

Gandhi participated in this initiative to provide a platform for young people to express their thoughts and ideas rather than to lecture on politics. The event took place at a local college, attracting a significant number of young women who engaged in discussions about their aspirations and concerns.

He urged the audience to “break the cage,” reinforcing the idea that each individual has unique dreams and visions that deserve to be pursued. His message to the youth was one of empowerment, recognising their capacity for change and the importance of self-belief.

Gandhi further explained that each person’s uniqueness should be celebrated, and young individuals should be encouraged to realise their potential. He insisted that the values of independence and self-discovery are crucial for the growth of a healthy society.

Women as Assets to Society

The Congress leader elaborated on his belief that women represent a significant asset to the nation, stating they possess qualities such as sensitivity, gentleness, and compassion, which he believes are paramount for societal progress. He argued that these traits can contribute positively to the future of India.

Gandhi indicated that women are often categorised into roles like daughter, wife, or mother, which, although meaningful, do not encapsulate the entirety of their identities. He acknowledged that while these relationships are important, they should not restrict how women see themselves or how society regards them.

He pointed out that women actively participate in various fields, including professional careers and sports, yet their identities are frequently defined through their connections to men. This observation urged a re-evaluation of how society perceives the roles of women, advocating for a more inclusive recognition of their contributions.

Through this engagement with the youth and his remarks on women’s dignity and identity, Rahul Gandhi aimed to inspire a new dialogue about gender equality and the need for a shift in societal perspectives concerning women’s roles. His call to action encourages both men and women to recognise and support the independence that women deserve.
