“Act of Cowardice”: Rahul Gandhi Condemns Custody of CJP Leaders Over Jantar Mantar Protest

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and a prominent Congress figure, has publicly condemned the five-day judicial custody of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. He asserted that the act of waving the national flag during a peaceful demonstration should not be deemed a criminal offence. Gandhi expressed his views in a post on X, stating that the jailing of youth for such actions is an act of cowardice.

In his statement, he emphasised that the protests are unified in their cause, representing citizens who are demanding their constitutional rights. He declared that Jantar Mantar, a historical site for protests, rightfully belongs to the people of India and asserted that it would be reclaimed by the citizens. His remarks reflect a broader sentiment of the opposition against the current government’s approach to dissent.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

Das and Ranka were taken into custody on Wednesday and subsequently sent to Tihar Jail after being accused of violating peace bonds and trespassing at Jantar Mantar. This site has recently been de-notified as an official protest location, according to police sources. The two leaders were detained after allegedly breaching barricades and entering the area without permission while demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police have filed charges against the activists, which include allegations of trespassing, violating prohibitory orders, and obstructing public servants from performing their duties. The two leaders had previously signed bonds to maintain peace for a year following their detention during a protest on Saturday. This incident has occurred amidst heightened security measures in the national capital due to ongoing protests by the CJP and other groups regarding alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process.

Formalities for bail for their associate, Ajinkya Shinde, are reportedly being finalised. The situation has raised concerns regarding the treatment of dissenting voices in the current political climate.

CJP Founder Accuses Government of Suppression

In response to the arrests, Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of CJP, accused the Central government of attempting to suppress dissent. He called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to openly declare an Emergency if the government intends to stifle protests. Dipke expressed his outrage on X, questioning the courage of the Prime Minister in light of the government’s actions against peaceful demonstrators.

Dipke highlighted that the only ‘crime’ of Das and Ranka was unfurling the national flag at Jantar Mantar, a symbolic act that he believes should not warrant such severe consequences. He urged the government to confront dissent directly rather than employing what he termed “cowardly tactics.” This incident has sparked a wider conversation about the rights of citizens to protest and the government’s role in managing dissent.

The developments surrounding the arrests of CJP leaders have attracted significant attention, raising questions about the balance between maintaining public order and upholding democratic rights. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the growing calls for accountability and transparency in its handling of protests and civil liberties.
