Rabindranath Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Peace: BJP President Nitin Nabin

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rabindranath Tagore was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize! This statement by BJP’s new National President Nitin Nabin has sparked controversy and invited ridicule. On Wednesday, while speaking at the Burdwan division’s workers’ conference in West Bengal’s Durgapur, the newly appointed All India President of the BJP, Nitin Nabin said, “Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore gave a new method of education to this land, including the country. For this, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.”

His statement has sparked controversy. As the video of his speech spread on social media, it triggered widespread laughter. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), along with the CPM and Congress, have strongly criticised this statement.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin, while seeking to woo Bengali voters with an eye on the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, recalled eminent Bengali personalities ranging from Raja Rammohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar to Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Uttam Kumar and Satyajit Ray, representing laurels from diverse fields. He was addressing the gathering while inaugurating the ‘Kamal Mela’ at Rajiv Gandhi Maidan in the Steel City of Durgapur.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin held a high-level strategy meeting with senior leaders of the West Bengal BJP in Durgapur, as part of the party’s preparations for the upcoming state assembly elections. The discussions focused on the current political climate in West Bengal, organisational strengthening, and forthcoming strategic initiatives aimed at consolidating the party’s presence across the state.

Prominent BJP leaders including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, former State President Dilip Ghosh, Dr Sukanta Majumdar and Rahul Sinha attended the meeting.

Times when BJP went wrong about Bengali Luminaries

The BJP does not know much about Bengal or its great personalities. This accusation has been levelled time and again by the state’s ruling party, the Trinamool Congress. BJP leaders have also been heard making controversial remarks about Bengali luminaries. Mispronouncing the names of Bengali luminaries and calling them by distorted names seems to have become a daily routine for the BJP, alleges TMC.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently sparked controversy after he addressed 19th-century Bengali novelist Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay as ‘Dada’ (elder brother). Union Home Minister Amit Shah had once referred to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore as Rabindranath Sanyal. A BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh even insulted pioneering Indian social, educational, and religious reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy by calling him a British agent. Now, the name of the newly appointed All India President of the BJP has been added to this list.

He was the first non-European and first Asian to win this award, honoured for his deeply sensitive and beautiful poetry in ‘Gitanjali’. As a Bengali polymath, he reshaped literature and music, and was the first to receive this award in the field of Literature.
