PM Modi Inaugurates Rs 3,350 Crore Projects in Ladakh Across Sectors

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually inaugurated five significant development projects in Ladakh, amounting to approximately Rs 3,350 crore. The projects encompass various sectors, including airport infrastructure, strategic road connectivity, renewable energy, and water conservation.

During the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted the importance of these initiatives in enhancing the region’s development and facilitating easier travel for residents and visitors alike. Among the key projects is a new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 640 crore. This terminal spans 23,800 square metres and is designed to accommodate 3.5 million passengers annually.

It incorporates geothermal energy technology to enhance energy efficiency, addressing the ecological sensitivities of the Ladakh region. The terminal aims to combine modern amenities with elements of local cultural heritage, thereby improving passenger experience and connectivity. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

This road connects Nimmu in Leh to Darcha in Himachal Pradesh, traversing the remote Zanskar Valley. It serves as an alternative route to Ladakh, complementing existing highways. The road’s strategic significance lies in its ability to facilitate the movement of personnel and supplies for armed forces, while also enhancing access to essential services for local residents.

Energy and Heritage Conservation Initiatives

As part of efforts to bolster energy security in the region, PM Modi inaugurated the 9 MW Hanu small hydroelectric project alongside the 66 kV double-circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi transmission line. These initiatives are expected to improve the reliability of the electricity network in Ladakh and enhance the utilisation of the region’s hydropower resources.

The projects aim to strengthen the power evacuation infrastructure, which is crucial for the region’s energy needs. Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh. This park aims to protect Ladakh’s archaeological heritage, which includes numerous prehistoric rock art sites featuring carvings that depict wildlife and human figures.

These ancient carvings provide valuable insights into the region’s historical narrative. The conservation park aims to safeguard this heritage for future generations, ensuring its preservation amid ongoing development. The inauguration also included the launch of Project Him Sarovar, which involves the development of 40 water bodies across 40 villages.

This initiative addresses the geographical and climatic challenges faced by Ladakh, particularly concerning water conservation. The project aligns with the objectives of Mission Amrit Sarovar and aims to improve irrigation and agricultural sustainability in the region. Farmers in Ladakh often face water shortages during critical sowing periods, despite the availability of snowmelt and glacial runoff at other times of the year.

Impact on Local Communities

Project Him Sarovar is likely to enhance long-term water security in the region by conserving water during periods of availability and making it accessible when needed. This initiative aims to support agricultural livelihoods and improve the overall quality of life for residents. By addressing the seasonal mismatch between water supply and demand, the project aims to create a more resilient agricultural framework in Ladakh.

Overall, these projects signify a substantial investment in the development of Ladakh, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and services in the region. The initiatives will benefit local communities by improving access to essential services, promoting sustainable energy use, and preserving the region’s rich cultural heritage.

As these projects come to fruition, they are likely to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Ladakh, fostering economic growth and improving the living standards of its residents. The government’s focus on development in this strategically important region underscores its commitment to regional progress and stability.
