Yuvraj Singh Accepts Assistant Coach Role with Delhi Capitals

The CSR Journal Magazine

Yuvraj Singh’s recent appointment as the assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals marks a significant reunion with Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly, the newly appointed head coach, was instrumental in nurturing Singh’s early international career. When Ganguly extended the offer for Yuvraj to join him, the former cricketer responded with a touch of humour, reminding Ganguly of their long-standing relationship. Yuvraj stated, “Dada told me, ‘Would you be my assistant?’ And I was like, ‘I’ve been your assistant for the last 25 years, so I’ll probably be doing the same job!’”

Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Yuvraj mentioned that he has been preparing for this opportunity over the past few years. He has previously worked with players on an individual basis but is eager to contribute to the team environment as a whole. He remarked on the excitement of being part of a collective effort, which he believes will provide a different experience compared to his past roles.

Insights from Past Experiences

Yuvraj Singh reflected on the valuable lessons he learned from Sourav Ganguly during his playing days. He highlighted Ganguly’s exceptional ability to foster a positive team atmosphere, which he considers a key strength of the former captain. “The best thing I learnt from Dada was how to create a good team environment. When he was captain and I made my debut, he kept us together,” Yuvraj explained. He credited Ganguly with instilling a belief in the team that they could achieve greatness, particularly in international tournaments.

According to Yuvraj, Ganguly has played a significant role in his development as a cricketer, serving as a mentor and guiding him through various challenges, including selection processes. Looking forward to their collaboration, Yuvraj expressed his eagerness to gain insights from Ganguly while also sharing his own perspectives.

With a shared vision for success, both Yuvraj and Ganguly aim to build a cohesive unit that can thrive under pressure and perform consistently. Their combined experience is expected to bring a renewed sense of purpose to the Delhi Capitals.

Aiming for IPL Success

Yuvraj Singh’s previous stint with the Delhi Capitals as a player did not see the franchise reach the playoffs, which adds to his determination to help the team succeed in the upcoming season. He emphasised that while qualifying for the playoffs is an initial goal, the ultimate ambition is to win the IPL title. “We definitely have the ability, and that’s why Dada and I are coming in — to bring that belief back,” he asserted.

Yuvraj is optimistic about the team’s potential, stating, “Our first target is to qualify, but we are here to win the championship, and I don’t see why we can’t do that.” He believes that past failures should not deter future success, and he is committed to building a squad that is ready to confront any challenges.

In preparation for the new season, the Delhi Capitals have already made strategic moves, acquiring Rishabh Pant from LSG and Zeeshan Ansari from SRH while parting ways with Kuldeep Yadav and T Natarajan. Yuvraj and Ganguly are focused on ending the franchise’s wait for an IPL title, with plans already in motion to create a competitive team.
