Pipalkoti Tunnel Collapse Death Toll Rises to 9; Rescue Operations Underway for Last Worker

The CSR Journal Magazine

The incident at the THDC tunnel in Pipalkoti, Uttarakhand, has tragically resulted in nine fatalities, with the latest recovery of a body reported on August 18. Officials confirmed that rescue teams swiftly identified another missing worker’s remains on Tuesday, prompting a continued search for one remaining worker presumed trapped within the debris. The Chamoli District Magistrate highlighted the ongoing operations as the teams work tirelessly to locate the last individual.

Details Surrounding the Incident

The catastrophic event occurred on August 13, during the construction of the THDC tunnel in the Hat-Siyasain area near the Birhi River. A landslide-like occurrence led to a sudden influx of water and debris, which trapped several workers inside the tunnel. Following this incident, emergency services were mobilised to initiate a rapid response, focusing on locating individuals presumed to be missing.

Rescue teams have been employing intensive search strategies within the compromised tunnel structure. They are systematically removing sludge and debris while simultaneously utilising suction pumps and other equipment to drain accumulated water present in the area. This operational approach aims to facilitate more effective movement for rescue personnel. Collaborative efforts are taking place among various agencies, including the district administration, police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to ensure a coordinated rescue initiative.

Ongoing operations are being closely monitored, with various resources and equipment strategically deployed to enhance efficiency in the search for the last missing worker. Rescue teams have been instructed to search all possible locations within the tunnel comprehensively, employing all necessary measures to locate and assist the trapped individual.

Government Response and Future Safety Measures

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has mandated a magisterial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tunnel collapse. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of prioritising the safety of workers involved in construction projects, asserting that it should always be a fundamental concern. The inquiry aims to ascertain pertinent facts and outline precautions required to prevent similar unfortunate incidents in the future.

A notable response came from Congress leader Harikrishna Bhatt, who urged for immediate safety audits of all ongoing construction projects in the region. Bhatt emphasised that such assessments should have been implemented after the incident, especially considering the influx of water and debris into the tunnel which posed significant risks to worker safety. He further expressed concerns regarding the announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the victims, questioning the adequacy of this amount in valuing human life.

As investigations continue, the strategies in place aim not only to address the immediate needs arising from this disaster but also to reinforce safety protocols across similar projects in the future. The situation remains critical and continues to evolve as rescue operations progress in their mission to uncover and assist the last missing worker.
