Odisha Police Confiscate Rs 2,700 Crore Worth of Cannabis in Naxal-Affected Areas

The CSR Journal Magazine

Odisha Police announced a significant breakthrough on March 21, revealing the seizure and destruction of illegal cannabis valued at approximately Rs 2,700 crore across five districts significantly impacted by Naxal activities. These operations, conducted from January 2025 to February 2026, targeted the districts of Boudh, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Gajapati, where cannabis cultivation has historically flourished.

Director General of Police Commends Success

In a press briefing, Odisha’s Director General of Police, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, highlighted the results achieved over a fourteen-month stretch. He indicated that the raids and destruction of cannabis have marked a major milestone for law enforcement, stating, “This represents a significant success for the Odisha Police, and we will maintain our efforts in the future.” He explained that the police have been intensively working to dismantle illegal cultivation and trafficking of cannabis.

Historical Context of Naxal Insurgency in Target Areas

According to DGP Khurania, the targeted districts were historically strongholds of Naxalite insurgency, which facilitated the widespread cultivation of cannabis. He remarked on the notable decline in cultivation due to ongoing police efforts, asserting, “Thanks to sustained operations, we can now observe a steady decrease in cultivation in these regions.” This focus underscores the authorities’ aim to eradicate illegal crops and the influence of Naxal groups.

Previous Declares Naxal-Free Status for Other Districts

DGP Khurania also mentioned that Bolangir and Bargarh districts have been declared Naxal-free, underscoring this achievement as a product of prolonged, coordinated operations between Central and State security forces. The recognition of these districts highlights the progress made in reducing Naxal activity, achieved by leveraging precise intelligence and active community involvement.

Community Support and Future Operations

The DGP expressed gratitude towards community members for their support and trust in law enforcement efforts, acknowledging the police forces’ courage and dedication as pivotal to the success of these operations. He assured that similar proactive measures will be continued in other districts affected by Naxal activities, aiming for the swift resolution of the issue despite the challenges posed by illegal narcotics cultivation.
