In response to allegations regarding a question paper leak during the Medical Postgraduate (PG) General Surgery MDMS examination, the Odisha government has initiated an official inquiry. This incident reportedly took place while the examination was ongoing, as candidates were seated and attempting to complete their tests. The situation has attracted considerable attention, particularly in the wake of previous controversies surrounding examination integrity in India.

The allegations involve the Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS) and claim that the examination’s question paper was distributed on a WhatsApp group. Sources indicate that complaints arose from candidates alleging that answers were also shared via certain WhatsApp numbers while the examination was still in progress, raising concerns about the fairness of the assessment process.

As a result of these allegations, academic authorities held an emergency virtual meeting to discuss the complaints and the overall conduct of the examination. Following this meeting, officials decided to implement heightened security measures for the remaining Medical PG examinations, including an outright prohibition of mobile phones and electronic devices in examination venues.

Examination Security Measures to be Enhanced

Professor Harekrushna Dalai, Chairman of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, confirmed the measures being put in place. He stated that all directives issued by the Vice-Chancellor regarding the examination’s conduct would be executed strictly. However, he urged caution against labelling this incident as a traditional “leak” before the investigation is concluded, as such a designation typically applies when a question paper is distributed prior to the examination.

Preliminary findings indicate that the question paper was allegedly sent outside the examination hall at approximately 9:58 am, after being distributed among candidates. Given this timeline, officials are categorising the situation as a possible unauthorized transmission of the paper during the examination, rather than an outright leak that occurred beforehand.

Investigation Focuses on Digital Evidence

The investigative team is meticulously analysing digital evidence, including WhatsApp messages, timestamps, and mobile records linked to the dissemination of the question paper and answers. Authorities aim to determine whether this incident has impacted the examination’s conduct or outcomes. At this point, no indication suggests that student organisations or organised networks were involved.

Professor Dalai remarked that no rush to conclusions would be made until the investigation is thoroughly completed. However, he did indicate that if any individuals—students, staff members, or otherwise—are found to have contravened examination regulations or played a role in the alleged dissemination of the question paper, strict disciplinary measures and potential legal actions will follow.

In light of this controversy, examination authorities have intensified monitoring and surveillance measures across Medical PG examination centres in Odisha. The goal is to ensure that the remaining examinations are executed in a secure, transparent, and fair manner, reflecting a commitment to maintaining academic integrity. This incident has drawn significant scrutiny towards the security of examinations, particularly in the current climate of heightened awareness regarding examining malpractice in India.
