Odisha Man Beheads Villager in Shocking Human Sacrifice Bid to Win Back Wife

The CSR Journal Magazine

A shocking case has emerged from Balangir district in Odisha, where a 40-year-old man allegedly murdered a resident of a neighbouring village as part of a suspected human sacrifice. The accused, identified as Shatrughan Sahu, reportedly beheaded 45-year-old Santosh Kharsel and buried the severed head beneath the puja room in his home. This incident allegedly took place in an attempt to win back his estranged wife, who has been living separately for about a decade.

The unsettling details began to unfold on August 20, when the headless body of Kharsel was recovered from a pond. He had been missing since August 18. Initial investigations showed that the victim was last seen with Sahu, prompting police action. Following the discovery of the body, Sahu was detained and interrogated by the authorities.

During the questioning, Sahu allegedly confessed to the crime, claiming that the act was the result of a heated argument after consuming alcohol. However, as authorities delved deeper into the case, he reportedly revealed that the killing was motivated by his desire to retrieve his wife.

Investigation Developments

According to Balangir Superintendent of Police, Abhilash G, Sahu invited Kharsel to his home on August 18 under the pretense of sharing a meal. It is believed that after Kharsel fell asleep, Sahu, along with four associates, assaulted him fatally before carrying out the beheading. The police’s initial hypothesis was that the accused had disposed of the head in a bid to mislead the investigation.

However, the discovery of the severed head in Sahu’s puja room significantly shifted the investigation towards a potential human sacrifice angle. The police have indicated that Sahu and Kharsel did not have a prior relationship, suggesting that Sahu deliberately targeted Kharsel.

A bloodstained weapon, allegedly used in the murder, has also been recovered from the scene. The authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter, questioning Sahu’s family members, including his mother, brother, and sister-in-law,  to determine if any additional individuals had a role in the crime.

Background Context

The investigation has revealed that Sahu’s wife, along with their two children, has been living apart from him for around 10 years. Police believe that Sahu’s suspected engagement in occult practices may have contributed to the deterioration of his marital relationship, prompting his wife to leave.

Investigators are reconstructing the crime scene as part of their ongoing probe, aiming to clarify the events leading up to this tragic incident. The case raises concerns about the potential prevalence of such practices in the region, highlighting the need for further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crime.

This case has drawn significant media attention, reflecting broader societal issues related to criminal activities and beliefs tied to superstition. As authorities continue their investigation, the community remains in shock over the unfolding events in Balangir district.
