North Korea Launches Ten Ballistic Missiles Following US-South Korea Drill Reduction

The CSR Journal Magazine

North Korea reportedly fired approximately ten short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, targeting waters off its eastern coast. The missile launches occurred around 5 pm and were initiated from the capital, Pyongyang. According to South Korea’s military, each missile covered a distance of approximately 300 kilometres before landing in the sea.

In response to the launches, South Korea has reportedly enhanced its surveillance operations and is actively sharing intelligence with the United States and Japan. Additionally, the National Security Council of South Korea has urged North Korea to halt its missile testing activities, reflecting ongoing tensions in the region.

Response to US-South Korea Military Exercises

The missile tests came in the wake of a decision by US President Donald Trump to significantly reduce the scale of the Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises, which started on Monday. Trump indicated that this reduction was influenced by what he described as a positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in conjunction with South Korea’s reluctance to support the US position on the ongoing war in Iran.

On Wednesday, both the South Korean and US military forces confirmed that the duration of their drills, initially planned for eleven days, has been cut by roughly fifty per cent, with some field exercises being cancelled altogether. This reduction has raised concerns regarding the defensive readiness of the allied forces in the face of potential North Korean aggression.

In a statement following Trump’s announcement, Kim Yo Jong, the prominent sister of Kim Jong Un, critiqued the US decision. She noted that the nature of the drills remains ultimately aggressive, despite their reduced duration. Kim Yo Jong asserted that the US should not misconstrue the military adjustment as a gesture of goodwill, hinting at unyielding attitudes towards negotiations.

Historical Context and Implications

The Ulchi Freedom Shield is described as a critical annual military exercise designed by the US and South Korea to enhance their preparedness against North Korean threats. While Washington and Seoul reiterate that these strategies are defensive in nature, North Korea vehemently regards them as wartime rehearsals. Prior to the current military drills, North Korea had accused both nations of planning increasingly provocative exercises during the summer, vowing to respond with enhanced deterrent measures.

Recent missile launches from North Korea preceded the drills, marking their first such activity since late June, indicating an ongoing pattern of response to joint military activities by South Korea and the US. The backdrop of these events includes a breakdown of diplomatic relations following the failed negotiations in 2019, wherein disagreements over sanctions relief and nuclear disarmament undermined progress.

Since those talks, North Korea has reportedly focused on strengthening its military capabilities, expanding ties with Russia, and asserting a firm stance on nuclear negotiations. Experts suggest that Kim Jong Un now possesses greater leverage than during previous meetings with Trump, potentially seeking worldwide recognition as a nuclear state while expecting substantial sanctions relief in exchange for only limited steps towards denuclearisation.
