‘No Accidents With Me’: Trump on Calling Hormuz ‘Strait Of Trump’

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 28, US President Donald Trump addressed attendees at the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit in Florida, where he referred to the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump.” He later corrected himself, clarifying his statement by emphasising that he often does not make “accidents” in his speech. His comments followed a discussion on the geopolitical significance of this key maritime route.

During his speech, Trump asserted that Iran is currently under significant pressure, suggesting that the country is eager to engage in negotiations. He mentioned that Tehran had sent several shipments of oil as a part of these discussions. “They’re begging to make a deal,” Trump remarked, emphasizing that ongoing negotiations were indeed taking place.

Importance of the Strait in Negotiations

Trump highlighted the strategic importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a critical point for global oil transit. He stated that securing an agreement would hinge on this key waterway being open. He remarked that the pressures Iran is facing would compel them to negotiate. “They are negotiating. They’re begging to make a deal,” he reiterated, indicating that he believed the negotiations were progressing.

Further explaining the developments, Trump recalled a recent admission from Iran regarding oil shipments. He noted that shortly after acknowledging negotiations, Iran agreed to send eight oil ships, later increasing the count to ten. He stated that this series of events confirmed the negotiation process that he had earlier claimed was in progress. He expressed optimism about the potential for reaching an agreement and underscored the necessity of the Strait’s reopening.

Trump Issues Warning to Iran

In addition to calling for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump issued a warning regarding Iran’s energy infrastructure. He indicated that Iran needed to comply swiftly, setting an initial deadline for full access to the waterway. If this were not achieved, he warned of possible severe repercussions, including the destruction of their power plants. On March 29, he extended this deadline by ten days, with a new target date of April 6, owing to ongoing dialogues with Tehran.
