Nepal Flood Toll Increases to 1,127 as Search for 4,858 Missing Continues

The death toll from the flash floods in Nepal has reached 1,127, with 4,858 individuals still unaccounted for one week after the catastrophic event, according to police reports on Wednesday. Rescue efforts remain ongoing as security forces have successfully saved 6,541 people amid challenging conditions brought on by incessant rainfall.

The continuous precipitation is hampering search operations in several areas that have suffered extensive damage. The floods were initially triggered by a collapse of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, severely impacting northern and central regions of the country. Rescue teams face additional obstacles, particularly in areas afflicted by the Bhotekoshi flood.

Rises in water levels and complicated conditions within project tunnels are disrupting efforts to locate missing personnel. Police have reported retrieving 348 bodies from Chitwan, 217 from Nawalparasi East, 190 from Nawalparasi West, and 155 from Nuwakot. Further recoveries include 66 from Gorkha, 59 from Dhading, 45 from Rasuwa, and 38 from Tanahu.

Ongoing Identification and Relief Efforts

Identification processes for bodies recovered have advanced, with postmortem and legal identification completed for 1,113 corpses. Of these, 95 bodies have been returned to their families. To assist families in identifying missing relatives, details of 911 unidentified bodies have been made available on the Nepal Police website.

Meanwhile, 7,912 police personnel have been deployed across the affected areas to facilitate search and rescue operations, distribution of relief supplies, and body management. Additionally, police teams are assisting families in relocating from high-risk zones to safer locations, while also working to clear debris-covered roads.

Coordination of search, rescue, and relief efforts is being carried out in collaboration with local authorities and community members. According to meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, moderate rain was anticipated in the Bhotekoshi flood-hit areas on Wednesday afternoon. Nearby regions, such as Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, may also experience rainfall. The weather department reported the highest rainfall of the past 12 hours at Nosyam Pati weather station in Sindhupalchok, measuring 60.2 millimetres.

Challenges Faced by Rescue Teams

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority’s Executive Chief, Dharma Raj Uprety, highlighted that rainwater filling a hydropower tunnel has complicated rescue work in Bhotekoshi. Recent rain has caused water levels to rise inside the project tunnels, disrupting ongoing operations. Search and rescue efforts involve teams comprising the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, foreign technical experts, and local project staff, but the missing workers have yet to be found.

Ganesh Karki, former president of the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal, noted that the transport of equipment to the tunnels has been hindered, further slowing rescue efforts. Identifying the entrances to the tunnels has also become increasingly challenging. Karki stated, “The material carried by the river has reached over the tunnels, making it difficult to determine their exact locations.”

As the situation evolves, with the number of fatalities increasing, thousands of individuals remain missing, and the adverse weather complicates rescue operations. Nepalese authorities are committed to continuing search and relief efforts in the flood-affected regions while simultaneously working on body identifications and assisting families in distress.
