Nandan Nilekani, former Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and co-founder of Infosys, has proposed a transformative approach to the examination system in India. During his address at the Bloomberg Economic Forum on Tuesday, he suggested the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate question papers on the day of the examination. This initiative aims to mitigate the risks associated with paper leaks and fraudulent activities.
Nilekani pointed out the systemic vulnerabilities that contribute to these leaks, stating that the current model creates economic incentives for individuals to sell question papers. He proposed that by establishing a comprehensive bank of questions and generating the exam paper at the last minute, the issue of a fixed question paper could be eliminated. This, he believes, would remove the economic motivation for leaking papers.
He elaborated on his vision, suggesting that this method could significantly enhance the integrity of the examination process. Nilekani’s proposal reflects a growing concern over the security of examination materials and the need for innovative solutions to address these challenges.
Call for Nationwide Computer-Based Testing
In addition to AI-generated question papers, Nilekani advocated for a nationwide transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT). He underscored the importance of ensuring that all examinations are conducted using this modern format. According to him, a robust network of testing locations is essential for the successful implementation of CBT.
Nilekani noted that there are currently 150,000 locations available for students to take tests, but he emphasised the need for further expansion of this network. The move towards CBT is seen as a crucial step in modernising the examination framework and making it more accessible to students across the country.
He expressed confidence that these systemic reforms would receive support from the government, highlighting the Prime Minister’s keen interest in implementing the committee’s recommendations. Nilekani’s remarks indicate a proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by the current examination system.
