“One City, One Pulse” brings together art, healing, and sustainability across Mumbai

Mumbai is set to witness a unique coming together of art, health, and community as the Mumbai Arts and Health Festival (MAHF) 2026 unfolds from May 6 to 10. Built around the theme “One City, One Pulse,” the festival aims to reimagine how creative expression can play a meaningful role in everyday well-being.

Unlike conventional art festivals, MAHF is designed as a city-wide, community-driven initiative. It brings together artists, healthcare professionals, environmentalists, and citizens to explore how creativity can support emotional health, social connection, and civic awareness. From public parks and hospitals to galleries and beaches, the festival will activate spaces across Mumbai, making art both accessible and participatory.

Art as a Tool for Healing

At its core, MAHF focuses on how creative practices can contribute to mental and emotional well-being. The festival highlights expressive forms such as movement, music, and visual arts as tools for stress relief, trauma recovery, and personal growth.

Workshops and sessions will bring together therapists, educators, and artists to explore how creative therapies can support individuals and communities. The opening day at Nanavati Max Hospital will feature discussions on arts in rehabilitation, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Taking Art to the Streets

One of the defining ideas behind MAHF is to move art beyond traditional gallery spaces and into the city itself. Public murals, community art sessions, and neighbourhood-based workshops aim to turn everyday spaces into platforms for expression.

Residents, local workers, and community groups are encouraged to participate, ensuring that the art created reflects lived experiences and local identity. From Five Gardens to Joggers Park, these initiatives aim to make creativity a shared, collective experience rather than an exclusive one.

Sustainability and Civic Partnerships

Environmental well-being forms a key pillar of the festival. In partnership with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), MAHF is linking ecological awareness with personal health.

A major highlight is the Climate, Care & Creativity panel at the National Gallery of Modern Art on May 8, where experts will discuss sustainability and its connection to holistic wellness. This will be complemented by on-ground initiatives such as a large beach clean-up at Dadar Beach on May 10, encouraging citizens to actively participate in environmental care.

The festival also works closely with civic bodies and local authorities, aligning with institutions such as municipal bodies and public safety agencies to ensure wider community engagement and safe, inclusive participation.

Dialogue, Cinema, and Community Conversations

Beyond installations and performances, MAHF creates space for dialogue. Panels and discussions on topics like community healing, mental health, and identity aim to bring together voices from healthcare, corporate wellness, and the arts.

A special screening of Mast Mahila Mandli, curated by CORO India, will showcase stories directed by marginalised women, adding a grassroots perspective to the festival’s narrative.

Nature-based activities, including eco-art sessions and yoga at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, further reinforce the link between environment, creativity, and well-being.

A Festival That Feels Like a Movement

The five-day event will conclude with a closing celebration in Bandra, featuring performances, installations, and interactive workshops. However, organisers emphasise that MAHF is more than just a festival, it is an evolving movement.

By bringing together art, health, and civic engagement, the initiative hopes to encourage people to reconnect with themselves, their communities, and their city. In doing so, it positions creativity not as a luxury, but as an essential part of collective well-being.

As Mumbai prepares to host this city-wide celebration, MAHF 2026 promises to turn everyday spaces into sites of healing, dialogue, and shared experience, one pulse at a time.
