Mumbai Airport’s International Flight Shift to Navi Mumbai Deferred Until March 2027

The CSR Journal Magazine

The planned partial relocation of international flights from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been postponed until the summer schedule beginning in March 2027. This decision was reached following discussions between Adani Airports Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the airport operator, and airline representatives on Tuesday, as reported by ANI. The shift was originally proposed to aid in the redevelopment of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1 (T1).

Both airports are managed by AAHL, which has been working to modernise facilities to meet increasing passenger demand. The senior leadership of Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), including Jeet Adani and Arun Bansal, reassured airlines that efforts would be made to minimise disruptions and honour existing slot allocations. Furthermore, they committed to maintaining the current slot arrangements during the winter schedule, alleviating some concerns among airline operators.

The proposal aimed to transfer 265 of the 770 weekly international departures from Mumbai airport to NMIA, effective from October 25. This move was intended to alleviate congestion at Terminal 2, thereby allowing for enhanced domestic operations during the ongoing redevelopment of T1. However, the plan faced significant pushback from airlines, which expressed worries about potential operational disruptions and the complexities of managing services across two airports.

Reasons Behind the Opposition

Airlines raised objections regarding the operational challenges that could arise from the proposed transition. They highlighted concerns about the impact on their schedules and the logistical difficulties associated with transferring international services between the two airports. The Ministry of Civil Aviation intervened in response to these concerns, advising the airport operator to defer the proposed changes until a coordinated plan could be developed with all stakeholders involved.

In light of these discussions, MIAL announced the formation of a joint working group tasked with preparing a comprehensive implementation plan for the redevelopment of T1 within the next two weeks. The operator has pledged to provide full support to airlines that may wish to shift some of their operations to NMIA, ensuring that the transition is as smooth as possible.

A spokesperson for MIAL stated that the airport operator has assured the airline community of minimal disruption and has committed to fully respecting historical slot allocations. The commitment to not alter any slots for the winter schedule was particularly emphasised, aiming to alleviate the concerns raised by airlines during the discussions.

Next Steps and Future Meetings

The meeting concluded with both MIAL and airline representatives expressing a renewed commitment to enhancing Mumbai airport to meet the expectations of the city’s residents. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 28, where further discussions will take place to address the ongoing concerns and outline the next steps for the redevelopment project.

In the interim, AAHL plans to engage with the network and slot-allocation teams of individual airlines to collaboratively determine the best course of action moving forward. This engagement aims to ensure that all parties are aligned and that the transition, when it occurs, will be executed with minimal disruption to airline operations.

The postponement of the flight shift underscores the complexities involved in airport operations and the need for careful planning to accommodate the interests of all stakeholders. As the situation develops, MIAL remains focused on ensuring that Mumbai airport continues to evolve in line with the growing demands of air travel.
