A funeral in Rajasthan turned chaotic when a man halted his own mother’s cremation by dramatically lying on the funeral pyre and demanding her silver ornaments. The incident, which occurred in Leela Ka Bas ki Dhani village of the Kotputli-Behror district and Viratnagar area of Jaipur Rural, has gone viral on social media after video footage of the disruption surfaced online.
The deceased, identified as 80-year-old Bhuri Devi (also referred to as Chheeter Reger in local accounts), passed away on May 3. Her final rites were delayed for nearly two hours due to a family conflict that erupted at the cremation ground.
After performing the rituals at home, the family removed her jewellery, including silver bangles, and entrusted them to her eldest son, Girdhari Lal, who was known to have cared for her during her later years. This act reportedly triggered outrage from her fifth son, Omprakash, who has long lived separately from the rest of the family.
Local Recalls the Unexpected Incident
Eyewitnesses and local villagers stated that Omprakash initially participated in the funeral procession and helped carry the bier. However, upon reaching the cremation site, tensions flared. As preparations for the pyre began, Omprakash unexpectedly climbed onto the wooden logs and refused to allow the cremation to proceed until he received his mother’s silver ornaments.
Despite numerous attempts by family members and villagers to persuade him to step aside, Omprakash remained unmoved. At one point, he allegedly threatened to set himself ablaze if his demand was not fulfilled. Even after being physically removed from the pyre, he continued his protest by sitting beside it, delaying the proceedings.
Ultimately, the situation de-escalated only after the jewellery was handed over to him at the cremation ground. With the ornaments in his possession, Omprakash agreed to vacate the area, allowing the funeral to continue. The rites, initially planned for midday, resumed after a two-hour delay.
Video of the Situation went Viral Online
Locals revealed that a long-standing dispute over property had created friction between Omprakash and his siblings. According to village residents, such disagreements have isolated him from the family for years. While the footage of the confrontation has widely circulated online, police officials confirmed that no official complaint has been registered.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, drawing attention to strained family dynamics and the lengths to which disputes over inheritance can escalate, even in moments of mourning.
