In a shocking incident, a 39-year-old man, Lalchhuanawma, was found dead in his rented home in Aizawl’s Mission Vengthlang locality early Sunday morning. At first glance, his death appeared to be a case of suicide, as his body was discovered hanging. However, growing doubts from the victim’s relatives prompted police to take a closer look.
Family’s Complaint Prompts Investigation
Initially registered as a suicide, the case took a turn when family members filed a formal complaint with police. They expressed suspicion over the circumstances of Lalchhuanawma’s death. Their intervention led authorities to begin treating the case as a potential homicide.
Wife and Alleged Lover Detained
Police detained Lalchhuanawma’s wife, Lalremruati, for questioning. Along with Lalremruati, a 28-year-old man from Lawngtlai district in south Mizoram. The man is believed to be her lover. Investigators probed the possibility of a romantic relationship as a motive.
After a thorough questioning, police found no evidence to implicate the alleged lover and released him. Lalremruati, however, reportedly confessed during interrogation, admitting to murdering her husband and claiming she acted alone.
Judicial Custody and Ongoing Investigation
Following her confession, Lalremruati was produced before a district court, which ordered her to be placed in judicial custody at Tanhril Central Jail in Aizawl. A post-mortem was conducted the same day, and the victim’s funeral was held shortly thereafter.
While police are still considering an extramarital affair as a possible motive, they have not ruled out other contributing factors. Investigators are also examining whether Lalremruati staged the scene to appear as a suicide after committing the crime a detail that could add complexity to the case.
Authorities continue their investigation to uncover the full circumstances behind the killing.
