Ministry of External Affairs Issues Advisory on Employment Risks in Russia

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has alerted nationals regarding the potential dangers of joining the Russian armed forces. Reports indicate that some Indians are being attracted to unverified job offers in the military sector, which may promise substantial financial rewards. The advisory was released in light of ongoing efforts by the Indian government to secure the release and repatriation of those already serving in military roles in Russia.

On Wednesday, the Indian government reiterated its warnings through a formal advisory, strongly advising citizens against enlisting in the Russian military. The MEA described this course of action as fraught with “mortal dangers,” underscoring the gravity of the situation. The advisories come amid continuous reports highlighting the recruitment of Indian nationals for military service in Russia.

The MEA further noted that some individuals have actively pursued opportunities to join the Russian armed forces, believing that they could later receive assistance for their release. The precautionary message emphasised that, despite potential monetary gains, this decision could lead to severe consequences.

Concerns Over Citizenship Changes

The ministry has flagged alarming instances of Indian nationals reportedly renouncing their citizenship to acquire Russian passports, subsequently joining the Russian military. The MEA indicated that some individuals engaged in this course of action without any consultation with Indian authorities, having been attracted by short-term financial incentives.

Furthermore, the MEA strongly discouraged citizens from accepting job placements from non-public entities, which may include voluntary groups lacking proper registration with the ministry. The advisory categorically labelled these job offers as risky, reiterating the necessity for caution when evaluating such opportunities abroad, particularly in Russia.

This advisory has become increasingly pertinent as the Indian government intensifies its efforts to assist nationals already engaged in military service in Russia. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri revealed that as of August, India had information about 227 Indian nationals having been recruited into the Russian military. He noted that out of this number, 139 individuals had been released, while sadly, there were reports of 51 fatalities among those enlisted.

Diplomatic Engagements to Ensure Safety

The issue of Indian citizens recruited by the Russian military has been openly discussed between India and Russia at various levels. Misri stated that the Indian embassy in Moscow is closely monitoring the situation concerning the repatriation of Indian individuals involved in the military. The embassy aims to facilitate the safe return of those still in service, maintaining an ongoing dialogue with Russian authorities.

According to Misri, the matter remains a priority for discussions with the Russian side, highlighting that India is committed to ensuring the well-being and swift discharge of its nationals involved in the Russian armed forces. The MEA’s advisory underscores that the Indian government is persistently engaged with Russian officials to provide necessary support and safeguard its citizens.

In conclusion, the MEA’s advisory serves as a critical reminder of the potential perils involved in seeking military employment in Russia. It calls for vigilance among Indian nationals and strongly urges individuals to consider the serious implications of such decisions carefully, aiming to prevent further complications in the future.
