Mercedes-Benz India has officially introduced the GLC Electric, priced at Rs 78.5 lakh (ex-showroom), marking a significant addition to its luxury electric SUV lineup in the Indian market. The vehicle is locally assembled at the company’s facility in Chakan, Pune, and will be initially available in the 400 4MATIC variant. This electric SUV features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, a 94kWh battery, and boasts a claimed WLTP range of up to 715km. Deliveries are set to commence during Diwali this year.

Specifications and Design Features

The GLC Electric measures 4,845mm in length, 1,913mm in width, and 1,644mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,972mm. This represents an increase of 84mm compared to the combustion-powered GLC, resulting in an additional 47mm of rear legroom, as per Mercedes-Benz’s claims. The SUV offers a boot capacity of 570 litres, expandable to 1,740 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Additionally, there is a front luggage compartment with a capacity of 128 litres.

Despite being an electric vehicle, the GLC Electric maintains practical capabilities, including a towing capacity of up to 2.4 tonnes and a permitted drawbar load of 100kg. The vehicle has a kerb weight of 2,535kg, ensuring it remains functional for various user needs.

In terms of exterior design, the GLC Electric features a prominent front grille adorned with 942 illuminated elements and the iconic three-pointed star logo. The grille is complemented by LED headlamps featuring Mercedes-Benz’s signature tri-star daytime running lights. The side profile showcases a sloping roofline, silver roof rails, and chrome detailing. The model for India is fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels and flush-fitting door handles, while the rear includes a full-width gloss-black panel housing LED tail-lamps.

Interior and Technological Advancements

The interior of the GLC Electric is highlighted by the 99.3cm (39.1-inch) MBUX Hyperscreen, which integrates the digital instrument cluster, central infotainment display, and front passenger screen into a single cohesive unit. The vehicle is equipped with the fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system, which utilises artificial intelligence technology from Microsoft and Google, enabling the virtual assistant to manage complex, multi-turn conversations.

Another notable feature is the SKY CONTROL panoramic roof, which employs switchable glass technology to alternate between transparent and opaque settings. This roof can also illuminate 162 stars through the ambient lighting system, enhancing the interior experience.

The GLC Electric is outfitted with the MB.DRIVE driver-assistance suite, which utilises data from up to ten external cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. Depending on the market and configuration, this system offers various features such as adaptive cruise control, steering assistance, lane-change assistance, and automated parking functions.

Performance and Charging Capabilities

Powering the GLC 400 4MATIC is a 94kWh NMC battery pack, paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that generates a combined output of 489bhp and 800Nm of torque. The electric SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in a claimed 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 210kmph. Mercedes-Benz states that the maximum WLTP range is 715km, although the official range may vary between 568km and 715km based on configuration and driving conditions.

The GLC Electric is built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, supporting DC fast charging at rates of up to 330kW. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 22 minutes, and a 10-minute charging session can provide up to 305km of WLTP range under optimal conditions. For home charging, the SUV comes with an 11kW onboard charger, with an optional 22kW AC charging system available.

Additionally, the GLC Electric features AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent control, and buyers can opt for rear-wheel steering, which enhances manoeuvrability. The vehicle also includes a One-Box braking system that combines regenerative and conventional braking, offering recuperation of up to approximately 300kW.
