MEA Refutes NYT Report, Says Musk Was Not On Modi-Trump Call

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday firmly denied a report suggesting that Tesla CEO Elon Musk was part of a recent telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, stating that the discussion was strictly between the two leaders.

The clarification came after a report by The New York Times claimed that Musk had joined the call, describing it as an unusual instance of a private individual participating in a high-level diplomatic exchange amid ongoing tensions in West Asia.

MEA Issues Strong Clarification

In an official statement, the MEA categorically rejected the report, reiterating that no third party was involved in the March 24 conversation.

“We have seen the story. The telephone conversation on 24 March was between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump only. As has been stated earlier, it provided the opportunity for exchange of views on the situation in West Asia,” the ministry said.

The statement sought to put to rest speculation about external involvement in what is typically a strictly controlled and confidential diplomatic communication between heads of state.

Such calls are usually conducted through secure channels and involve only designated officials, making the reported participation of a private business leader highly unusual.

White House Responds, Avoids Direct Confirmation

While the MEA issued a clear denial, the White House response appeared more measured. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, responding to queries about the report, did not directly confirm or deny Musk’s involvement but emphasised the strength of ties between the two leaders.

“President Trump has a great relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and this was a productive conversation,” she said.

Her remarks focused on the substance of the interaction rather than addressing the specifics of the report, leaving room for continued speculation in some quarters.

Report Sparks Questions Over Protocol

According to The New York Times, Musk’s alleged participation was based on inputs from two US officials and was described as a rare development in diplomatic practice.

The report suggested that the move, if true, could signal a shift in how informal influence and private sector figures intersect with government decision-making, particularly in times of geopolitical crisis.

It also pointed to a perceived thaw in relations between Musk and Trump, following a reported fallout last year when the tech entrepreneur exited a government-linked role tied to administrative reforms.

However, India’s swift and unequivocal denial underscores the sensitivity of such claims and the importance attached to maintaining protocol in international diplomacy.

Context Of The Modi-Trump Conversation

The call between Modi and Trump took place against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia, with both leaders discussing the evolving situation and its global implications.

India has consistently maintained a position calling for stability in the region, particularly with regard to energy security and safe maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

The conversation was seen as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Washington as both countries navigate complex geopolitical challenges.

Broader Implications

The controversy highlights the growing scrutiny around the role of influential private individuals in global affairs, particularly figures like Elon Musk, who have significant economic and technological clout.

At the same time, the episode underscores the importance governments place on maintaining clarity and control over official communications, especially in sensitive geopolitical contexts.

With the MEA’s clarification, India has sought to firmly reassert the formal nature of its diplomatic engagements, signalling that interactions between national leaders remain within established institutional frameworks.
