Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena of attempting to hide the truth surrounding an audio recording that allegedly discusses a payment of Rs 500 crore to him. Jarange asserts that the audio clip is authentic and has called for an independent investigation led by senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers or a judge. He believes that there are efforts underway to discredit the recording to shield those implicated and undermine the Maratha reservation movement.
Formation of Special Investigation Team
A three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to probe the audio recording in question. Last week, Jarange released the clip, which reportedly features a conversation among BJP officials regarding the alleged payment facilitated through Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Shrikant Shinde, who is the son of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During a press conference in Ankushnagar, Jalna district, Jarange expressed concerns that attempts would soon be made to discredit the audio, stating, “They cannot digest the truth and are spreading a false narrative against me.”
Jarange further questioned how Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam obtained the complete recording, raising suspicions about who provided it to Kadam and why only a segment of the audio was made public. He challenged the BJP and Shiv Sena to clarify their involvement, asserting, “If they have no involvement in this matter, they should come forward and expose the truth.”
In light of safety concerns, Jarange has refrained from disclosing the identity of the individual who provided him with the recording. He urged both Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis to ensure the protection of this source, highlighting the potential risks involved.
Jarange’s Concerns Over Reputation and Movement
Jarange has alleged that state resources are being misused to damage his reputation and hinder the Maratha reservation movement. He stated, “If these people are conspiring without the knowledge of Fadnavis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it will damage the BJP.” He emphasised that failure to reveal the truth could lead to public suspicion regarding the involvement of prominent political figures.
In a bid to strengthen the Maratha community’s interests, Jarange announced plans to establish a group of “Maratha Sevaks,” which he described as dedicated volunteers committed to identifying and countering those acting against the community’s welfare. He expressed gratitude towards the police chiefs of Jalna and Beed districts for resisting political pressure, while also criticising the security measures in place during a recent rally at Narayan Gad in Beed district.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications of the audio clip and the subsequent allegations may have significant repercussions for the political landscape in Maharashtra. Jarange’s assertions have sparked widespread attention, raising questions about transparency and accountability within the ruling parties.
