“Manipur Suffered for Three Years, President Remained Silent”: TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Member of Parliament, recently criticized President Droupadi Murmu for her silence during the prolonged unrest in Manipur that lasted for three years.

During a public meeting held at Gopinathpur Ground in Mathurapur, Banerjee specifically referenced the lack of presidential response as a significant oversight. He alleged that the President was excluded from the inauguration of the Ram Mandir due to her caste, marking it as another instance of disregard for her office.

Remarks on National Security and Presidential Authority

Banerjee emphasized the responsibilities of the President in matters of national security, describing the military as being under her command. He argued that during conflicts between India and Pakistan, the directives are expected to be issued by the President, yet he asserted that the U.S. President appeared to have more influence in such situations. His comments were directed at highlighting what he sees as a failure of the presidency to act during critical events.

Accusations Against the BJP

The TMC leader also took the opportunity to criticize the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the party targets West Bengal in the run-up to elections. He believed that the BJP’s actions reflect a broader dismissal of the governance and administrative apparatus of the state. Banerjee stated that the state’s officials had communicated that the organizers of the International Santal Conference had failed to adequately manage the event, absolving the TMC of responsibility.

Clarifications Regarding Event Management

Banerjee clarified that the mishaps occurring during the International Santal Conference, which was organized under the jurisdiction of the Airports Authority of India, should be attributed to the event organizers rather than the TMC government.

He stressed that the party respects the role of the President and the office she holds, asserting that the failures observed during the conference lay primarily with those who were charged with organizing it. He sought to shift blame from the state to the individuals and groups that accepted the invitation and managed the event.

Reactions to Presidential Disappointment

His remarks followed President Murmu’s expressed disappointment regarding the arrangements made for the 9th International Santal Conference in Darjeeling, West Bengal. The President criticized both the venue selection and noted the absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which added to the controversy surrounding the event.

These developments underscore ongoing tensions between the TMC government and the central BJP leadership, particularly as elections approach, influencing the political landscape in the state.
