Manipur Meitei Man Kidnapped, Shot Dead in Churachandpur; Murder Video Goes Viral

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a disturbing episode linked to Manipur’s ongoing ethnic violence, a 38-year-old Meitei man, Mayanglambam Rishikanta, was abducted and shot dead in Churachandpur district on Wednesday. A chilling video of the killing, showing Rishikanta pleading for his life moments before being shot, has gone viral on social media, prompting police to launch an investigation.

Victim’s Background and Circumstances

Rishikanta, a resident of Kakching district, was married to a woman from the Kuki community in Churachandpur. Having recently returned from Nepal, where he was employed, he was on a short leave when the incident occurred.

Reports suggest that he was abducted along with his wife. Meitei organisations allege that his wife had obtained prior permission from the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and local authorities for his visit.

Chilling Video Captures Killing

The viral footage shows Rishikanta sitting on a rough, deserted road at night with hands folded, pleading with at least two armed men. Despite his appeals, one of the assailants shoots him at close range, killing him instantly. The brutal act has shocked communities and highlighted the continuing ethnic tensions in the state.

Suspected Militant Involvement

Authorities suspect that the assailants belonged to the United Kuki National Army (UNKA), a militant group not party to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the Manipur government and several Kuki-Zo armed groups.

Since ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023, the Meitei and Kuki communities have largely avoided each other’s territories, effectively dividing Manipur along ethnic lines.

Escalating Toll of Violence

The ongoing hostilities have already claimed more than 260 lives and displaced thousands. Churachandpur, a Kuki-majority district, has been at the centre of repeated clashes, while the Meitei population predominantly resides in the Imphal valley and nearby areas.

Authorities are investigating the killing and have appealed for calm as tensions continue to simmer.
