Times Square Durga Utsav Attracts Large Crowds Despite Unfavourable Weather

The CSR Journal Magazine

The second Times Square Durga Utsav, held at Father Duffy Square in New York, successfully attracted a significant gathering of Bengali expatriates. This two-day event featured religious rituals, Mahalaya observances, music, and dance, offering a joyful reunion for individuals who had travelled from various states across the United States. Despite the inclement weather, participants enthusiastically engaged in the celebrations, joining local and international visitors.

Organised by the Times Square Durga Utsav Association, the festival received event partnership from the Asha Group, alongside support from Apnabazar. Collective efforts from organisers, volunteers, and partners played a crucial role in bringing the spiritual and cultural festivities to fruition. Visitors flocked to the venue from the outset to participate in worship and enjoy numerous cultural presentations.

The event not only served as a platform for devotion but also showcased vibrant cultural exchanges, including dance performances, children’s presentations, and music set to traditional Bengali themes. These activities underscored a sense of community pride among expatriates celebrating their heritage at a globally recognised location.

Recognition of Organisations Preserving Bengali Culture

An important feature of the festival was the honouring of six organisations that have significantly contributed to Durga Puja celebrations in the United States for over five decades. The honoured organisations included Bay Area Prabasi Inc. from California, the Bengali Association of Greater Chicago in Illinois, the Bengali Cultural Society in Ohio, the East Coast Durga Puja Association in New York, Kallol from New Jersey, and Pragati in Pennsylvania. This acknowledgement was a testament to their enduring efforts to sustain Bengali traditions and cultural practices across generations.

The recognition ceremony served not only to celebrate these organisations but also to highlight the importance of transmitting Bengali heritage to younger generations, ensuring that cultural values endure in diaspora communities. Performances such as the Dash Mahavidya dance drama enriched the event, alongside musical acts featuring Mekhla Dasgupta and Deyashini Roy, illustrating the strong ties attendees maintained with their roots.

Bishwajit Saha, one of the event organisers and editor of the festival’s commemorative publication, underscored the critical role played by individuals and organisations in promoting Bengali culture on a global scale. Visitors expressed their joy at seeing their traditions represented at such an iconic venue, affirming the impact of cultural events in enhancing communal bonds.

Final Acknowledgements and Community Harmony

As the festival concluded, Shashadhar Hawladar, president of the association, and general secretary Nirupama Saha extended their gratitude to all volunteers and participants for their efforts in travelling from various parts of the country. They acknowledged the unwavering enthusiasm displayed despite the adverse weather conditions and thanked everyone for their cooperation and joyful participation.

The second Times Square Durga Utsav not only celebrated Bengali heritage but also fostered harmony among diverse communities through religious observances and engaging performances. As attendees left the event, many felt a renewed connection to their cultural identities, strengthened by shared experiences and the vibrant displays of artistry and devotion offered throughout the festival.

The event concluded successfully, once again emphasising the relevance of cultural heritage in fostering unity among the Bengali expatriate community and beyond. The celebration reinforced the role of such festivals in integrating cultural traditions within the broader fabric of American society, showcasing the beauty of multicultural exchange.
