Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) has claimed that Israel is applying its military strategies used in Gaza to Lebanon, as the Israeli military intensifies attacks in the region following directives for the forced displacement of numerous Lebanese civilians. The charity’s CEO, Steve Cutts, stated that recent bombings and evacuation orders are creating a climate of fear among the civilian population, particularly in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Casualties and Humanitarian Concerns

The Israeli military announced a mandatory evacuation for all of southern Lebanon on Wednesday, leading to substantial movements of residents fleeing potential military action. The situation escalated further the next day when a similar order was issued for southern Beirut, coinciding with an increased Israeli military offensive in the country. Intense clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have been reported, particularly after Hezbollah launched rockets into Israeli territory following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, amidst joint military strikes by the US and Israel.

Increased Death Toll Amid Ongoing Conflict

As of the latest updates from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in at least 217 confirmed fatalities and approximately 798 injuries since the escalation began on Monday. Human rights organizations have expressed urgent concerns regarding the forced displacement orders, highlighting the plight of families who have nowhere to go due to the saturation of available shelters in Lebanon.

Desperate Living Conditions Reported

Reports indicate that displaced individuals are resorting to sleeping on the streets, with many taking refuge in public spaces such as the Corniche in Beirut, or in schools repurposed as temporary shelters. Journalists have noted that civilians are asking for clarity on the duration of their displacement, but local authorities have been unable to provide answers regarding when they might return home.

Comparison to Previous Military Campaigns

The Israeli military has previously employed similar strategies during its operations in Gaza, which has led to repeated displacements of civilians amidst ongoing bombardments over the past two years. In September of the previous year, an order for the complete evacuation of Gaza City was widely condemned by the international community for its perceived cruelty and illegality. Human Rights Watch criticized such maneuvers as exacerbating already dire living conditions for Palestinians.

Israeli Officials Align Lebanon Offensive with Gaza Strategy

Israeli leaders have drawn parallels between the current military tactics in Lebanon and those used in Gaza. Following the issuance of the evacuation order for the southern suburbs of Beirut, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich remarked on plans to approach the conflict in the Dahiyeh area with a strategy akin to that employed in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza that has suffered extensive destruction due to the ongoing conflict.
