Lawyers at Karkardooma Court Suspend Work Over Police Inaction in Assault Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lawyers’ Body at Karkardooma Court has decided to suspend work on Friday in response to the alleged inaction by the Delhi Police regarding an assault on an advocate in the Gazipur area. This move follows a meeting of the Executive Committee held on Thursday, wherein the Shahdara Bar Association (SBA) issued an official notice announcing the work stoppage as a form of protest against the police’s failure to act appropriately.

Details of the Assault Case

The incident in question involves an advocate named Sanjeev Chaudhary, who was reportedly violently attacked and robbed within the jurisdiction of the Gazipur Police station. Although a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, the lawyers’ body indicated that no significant action has been taken to address the situation. As a demonstration of their dissatisfaction, the SBA has declared that no police officers will be permitted to enter the courthouse premises during the protest.

Efforts to Seek Police Accountability

Following the assault, members of the executive committee of the bar association approached the Station House Officer (SHO) at Gazipur, urging for immediate actions against the accused individuals. Additionally, the SBA has raised concerns regarding another incident involving gunfire directed at an advocate in the Mayur Vihar area, arguing that the police have failed to apprehend all suspects involved.

Statements from SBA Officials

Advocate Narveer Dabas, the Secretary of the Shahdara Bar Association, emphasized that the lack of police action in both cases has led to a sense of insecurity among lawyers. He noted that pertinent evidence, including photographs of the accused and their vehicle’s registration number, was provided to the police, yet there has been little progress made in the investigations.

Implications for Legal Community

The decision to halt work signifies the lawyers’ community’s growing frustration with the perceived ineffectiveness of local law enforcement in dealing with violence against their members. The SBA’s actions reflect a broader concern regarding the safety and security of lawyers operating in various districts of Delhi, urging authorities to take their complaints seriously and enforce the law effectively.
