Lahore Qalandars Penalised 5 Runs for Ball Tampering in Clash with Karachi Kings

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a notable incident during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, the Lahore Qalandars were assessed a five-run penalty for ball tampering in their match against the Karachi Kings. The penalty was enacted by the match officials after they determined that the Qalandars had intentionally modified the condition of the ball just before the final over of the game. This occurred during a tense scenario where the Karachi Kings needed 14 runs to secure victory, with Haris Rauf from Qalandars assigned to bowl the last over.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Penalty

The controversy unfolded after 19 overs in the second innings. During Haris Rauf’s run-up, a brief interaction took place among Qalandars players Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Fakhar Zaman, all handling the ball. Observing this exchange, Umpire Faisal Afridi decided to inspect the ball. Following thorough discussions and examinations, both Umpire Faisal Afridi and Sharfuddoula reached the conclusion that the Qalandars had deliberately altered the ball’s condition. The resulting penalty of five runs was awarded to the Karachi Kings, and the game ball was promptly replaced.

Impact on the Match and Player Reactions

This penalty significantly influenced the dynamics of the match, as it reduced the target for the Kings to just nine runs. The final over proved pivotal, with Khushdil Shah getting out on the very first delivery. This was followed by a no-ball from Rauf. Subsequently, Abbas Afridi hit a four and a six, clinching a dramatic win for the Karachi Kings with three balls remaining.

Shaheen Shah Afridi’s Response to the Decision

Following the match, Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Shah Afridi expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the umpire’s ruling, yet opted to refrain from further commentary during the post-match presentation. He mentioned, “Actually I do not know if the ball was tampered. We will see it on the camera and discuss it later. The five-run penalty is painful, but for now, I can’t say much.” This loss marked the Qalandars’ second match of the season, leaving them with one victory and one defeat, while the Karachi Kings continued their perfect start with two wins from two matches.
