Know Which Indian Cities Will Witness the Rare Six-Planet Alignment on Feb 28

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant celestial event is set to take place on February 28, when six planets, including Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, will align in the evening sky.

This rare planetary parade will be visible after sunset, providing a spectacular display for astronomers and casual observers alike. Various regions in India are expected to offer different viewing conditions depending on their geographical and atmospheric specifics.

Best Locations for Observation

Fortunately, the planetary alignment can be viewed from nearly all parts of India, provided the sky is clear and there is a clear view toward the western horizon. Major metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai will facilitate easy access for people looking to spot the planets by simply stepping onto rooftops or open areas.

For optimal visibility, particularly for the dimmer planets like Uranus and Neptune, it is advisable to seek locations with minimal light pollution. Ideal viewing spots might include certain areas in Ladakh, rural regions of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, coastal zones in Tamil Nadu, and elevated grounds like Jawadhu Hills near Chennai.

Timing of the Event

The best time to observe this celestial phenomenon is approximately between 6:15 PM and 8:00 PM IST, about 30 to 45 minutes after sunset. The exact timing will depend on the specific location across India. Observers should begin by looking westward, where Venus will appear as a bright jewel close to the horizon with Mercury positioned nearby.

Mercury might be less visible due to twilight. Saturn will be found slightly higher in the sky, while Jupiter will dominate the view from a higher vantage point, closer to the south or southeast, shining near the stars in constellations Orion and Gemini. To appreciate the full scope of the alignment, observers are encouraged to scan the sky diagonally from west to higher elevations.

Observation Tips

For most viewers, four planets,Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury, should be easily visible to the naked eye. However, Uranus and Neptune will appear fainter, necessitating the use of binoculars or a small telescope for better visibility.

In celebration of this unique planetary alignment, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has released new sonifications, auditory translations of astronomical data, for Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. For an optimal viewing experience, individuals are advised to find locations without buildings or trees obstructing the western view and to minimize exposure to city lights while checking the weather for clear conditions.

Safety Precautions While Viewing

It is crucial to emphasize safety while observing the planets. Observers should never look at the sun before it has fully set, as it may cause severe eye damage. With the planetary parade approaching, families and friends are encouraged to gather and prepare to witness the extraordinary display that nature has to offer in the evening sky.
