Kerala Government to Request Increase in Non-Domestic LPG Cylinder Quota

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Thiruvananthapuram, a critical meeting led by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has determined the need for immediate action regarding the lack of LPG cylinders intended for non-domestic usage within the state. The assembly reached a consensus to formally request the central government to boost the allocation of non-domestic LPG cylinders, which is currently capped at 20 percent. Given the high number of migrant workers and the rising demand for cooking gas, a higher allocation is deemed essential.

Formation of Monitoring Committees

To ensure effective oversight of LPG cylinder consumption and distribution across industrial and domestic sectors, the state government has announced the establishment of a state-level monitoring committee. Additionally, district-level committees will be formed, under the direction of district collectors, to facilitate localized monitoring efforts. A specially designed dashboard system will be implemented to track both supply and consumption patterns on a daily basis.

Review of Non-Domestic LPG Distribution Prioritization

The meeting, which involved key representatives from major LPG companies, also assessed the need to establish a priority framework for the distribution of non-domestic LPG during periods of supply shortages. Priority will be granted to essential services such as hospitals, old-age homes, orphanages, schools, community kitchens, and canteens within IT parks and factories. LPG companies have indicated their willingness to provide guidelines for this prioritized distribution.

Emphasis on Critical Services

The Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of ensuring that the operational capabilities of crematoriums are not hindered due to the ongoing LPG shortage. The Civil Supplies Department will engage in discussions to formulate a comprehensive list of additional sectors that should be classified as priority services.

Measures Against Misuse of Domestic Cylinders

To combat the unauthorized use of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial activities, intensified inspections will be carried out by enforcement teams comprised of officials from various departments, including the Revenue Department, Civil Supplies Department, police, and representatives from LPG companies. The Civil Supplies Department will also take measures to be proactive against misinformation related to the cooking gas crisis.

Key Participants in the Meeting

The gathering included prominent figures such as Civil Supplies Minister G R Anil, Finance Minister K N Balagopal, Local Self Government Minister M B Rajesh, Chief Secretary Dr A Jayathilak, and other senior officials. Representatives from major public sector oil companies, including Geetika Verma, Chief General Manager of IOCL, Tharyan Peter, LPG State Head for BPCL, and Amsur Rahman, Regional Manager of HPCL, were also in attendance.
