Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah officially announced the reopening of Kaziranga National Park for the 2026–27 tourism season on October 3, 2026. The ceremony took place at the Kohora Range, where the Minister welcomed visitors and wildlife enthusiasts from both national and international backgrounds. Joining him were Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and officials from the Forest Department, all celebrating the commencement of the new tourism season.

Tourism Activities Commence

As part of the opening activities, jeep safaris began immediately, while elephant safaris are anticipated to restart within the next ten to twenty days. This timeline is contingent upon the completion of required preparatory measures. During the opening, Minister Mallabaruah expressed his aspiration that the number of tourists this season would exceed that of the previous year.

During his address, Mallabaruah acknowledged the efforts of all stakeholders involved with Kaziranga in creating a welcoming environment for tourists. He highlighted the collaboration between the Forest and Tourism Departments, emphasising its importance in enhancing infrastructure, upgrading existing facilities, and introducing new attractions to accommodate the growing influx of visitors.

The Minister expressed optimism about the upcoming season, noting positive booking trends that suggested increased tourist arrivals. Moreover, he stressed the crucial link between tourism growth and economic opportunities for local residents, aiming for enhanced self-reliance and improved living standards through tourism-related activities.

Development of Connected Tourism Circuits

In his remarks, Mallabaruah indicated that the departments are actively seeking to develop new tourism circuits that link Kaziranga with nearby attractions. This initiative aims to encourage visitors to extend their stay to two to four days, allowing for a more enriching exploration of the region while simultaneously benefiting local communities.

Furthermore, Mallabaruah emphasised wildlife conservation as a significant factor in Kaziranga’s appeal as a tourist destination. The park, known for its one-horned rhinoceros, continues to attract visitors from around the world. He credited the Assam Government’s conservation initiatives for the observed decline in rhino poaching and asserted that these efforts have fortified Kaziranga’s reputation as a premier wildlife destination.

At the same time, he highlighted the necessity of maintaining ecological balance in the protected area. Ensuring that the natural environment is preserved is essential to provide visitors with the authentic experience of the park’s rich wildlife and biodiversity.

Collaboration Among Stakeholders

With the collaborative efforts of the Forest Department, Tourism Department, local communities, and various stakeholders, the government anticipates that Kaziranga will continue to build on its previous tourism performance during this new season. Mallabaruah called for further cooperation among all parties to sustain Kaziranga’s inviting atmosphere while safeguarding its natural heritage.

In conclusion, the Minister wished success to all involved stakeholders and reiterated the importance of ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach the local population. The collaborative efforts at Kaziranga could not only enhance the visitor experience but also support the livelihoods of those who depend on tourism.
