Kashmir Welcomes Thousands of Migratory birds, Boosting Ecological Tourism

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Jammu and Kashmir administration is intensifying its efforts to foster ecological tourism and promote environmental conservation throughout the Union Territory. A significant emphasis is placed on safeguarding wetlands and wildlife habitats.

Initiatives aimed at restoring wetlands, improving water management, combating poaching, and promoting sustainable tourism are enhancing Kashmir’s reputation as a prominent destination for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers, especially during the winter season.

Arrival of Migratory Birds Enriches Winter Landscape

As part of this initiative, winter in Kashmir has once again welcomed thousands of migratory or “guest” birds across its wetlands, including Hokersar, Hygam, Pampore, and Bandipora. Every year starting in November, these birds migrate thousands of kilometers from regions such as Siberia, Russia, China, Northern Europe, and Central Asia to spend nearly five to six months in the valley’s cold waters. Their presence adds vibrancy and contributes to the ecological balance of the area’s lakes.

Support for Migratory Birds Ensures Safe Environment

While these avian visitors naturally feed on water nuts, herbs, and insects, wetland authorities, particularly at Hokersar, supplement their diet with grains to maintain a nurturing environment. Wildlife officials note that the migratory bird season predominantly begins in December, lasting for about three months, with an estimated arrival of around 200,000 birds during this time. Maintaining appropriate water levels in wetlands and preventing illegal poaching practices remain challenges for the authorities. Special teams are deployed for regular patrols, and continuous monitoring is conducted to ensure the environment is conducive for the birds.

Wetlands Serve as Vital Resting Spots for Avian Species

Starting from October, the wetlands of Kashmir transition into flourishing centers of avian activity, peaking in bird numbers by February. Out of the nine major resting sites in the valley, Hokersar experiences the highest influx of migratory birds, serving as a critical stopover and winter sanctuary during their long migratory journeys. Residents and students express that such natural spectacles bring attention to often-overlooked aspects of Kashmir’s beauty. They assert that initiatives focusing on migratory birds help in reshaping perceptions of Kashmir beyond prominent tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Dal Lake.

Awareness Campaigns Engage Local Communities

Awareness programs and field visits encourage the youth to appreciate wetlands as integral to the region’s natural heritage and ecological identity. Wildlife Department officials emphasize the ongoing dedication of specialized teams throughout the season to protect migratory birds and their habitats. Each February, extensive bird counts are conducted, with previous figures recording between seven to eight million birds in various wetlands. Areas such as Hokersar, Dal Lake, and Wular Lake are closely monitored, supplementary feeding is provided when necessary, and habitat management protocols are implemented to ensure safe feeding, resting, and breeding for the migratory species.

Migratory Birds Enhance the Biodiversity of Kashmir

Wildlife officials indicated that migratory birds generally inhabit Kashmir from October to March, with essential activities primarily occurring in the wetlands during this period. Their presence significantly contributes to the vibrancy and beauty of lakes like Hokersar, reinforcing the commitment of the staff to protect these birds as a matter of responsibility and pride.
