A team of eight members from the ruling NDA party, headed by Mathura MP Hema Malini, is visiting Karur, Tamil Nadu today to take stock of the situation and review the circumstances that led to the recent stampede at Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally. The rally, held on September 27, left 41 people dead and over 60 critically injured in a tragic crush.
Who would be accompanying Hema Malini?
Along with Hema Malini, the delegation includes BJP chief JP Nadda, Anurag Thakur, Tejasvi Surya, Braj Lal, Aprajita Sarangi, Rekha Sharma, Shrikant Shinde, and Putta Mahesh Kumar from the TDP. The delegation is expected to meet the families of the deceased and prepare a detailed ground report.
Who all have met the families till now?
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met the bereaved families on Monday, accompanied by Union Minister L. Murugan and Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran. Speaking to reporters, Sitharaman said, “I can’t describe their sorrow. I am shattered … I am unable to speak or console the bereaved.” She also visited the Government Medical College Hospital in Karur.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stressed the need for strict regulations on mass gatherings to prevent such tragedies. Sharing a video on X, Stalin said, “What happened in Karur is a great tragedy; a cruel tragedy! A tragedy that has never happened before; a tragedy that should never happen again.”
Who has been arrested?
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) district secretary Mathiazhagan has been arrested in connection with the Karur stampede. He has been booked under four sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), Section 125 (endangering life of others), and Section 223 (disobedience to order).
Two other TVK office-bearers named in the FIR are state general secretary Bussy Anand and deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar.
