Karnataka Health Department Confirms Rise in H1N1 Cases is Normal Seasonal Trend

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Department of Health and Family Welfare in Karnataka has stated that the recent rise in H1N1 influenza cases, commonly referred to as seasonal flu, is consistent with the typical seasonal increase observed during the monsoon. The department clarified that these fluctuations in reported cases align with established patterns.

A review meeting led by Health Minister U T Khader brought together senior health officials, both at the state and district levels. During this meeting, the minister reassured citizens that the state’s health infrastructure is well-prepared and adequately stocked with essential medicines to manage any potential spikes in flu cases.

Influenza Surveillance Data and Case Statistics

The highest concentration of cases was reported in the MSU-Greater Bengaluru Authority, which accounted for 2,070 infections. This was followed by Bengaluru Urban with 1,011 cases and Udupi with 300 cases. These statistics underscore the importance of continued vigilance in monitoring influenza activity across the state.

The state has strengthened surveillance protocols for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) by following guidelines from the World Health Organization and the Union Health Ministry. Designated sentinel sites under the ICMR-NCDC network are facilitating comprehensive respiratory virus monitoring and timely testing of samples.

Preparedness and Public Health Recommendations

Karnataka’s health facilities have been instructed to maintain adequate stocks of crucial supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPE), N95 masks, and antiviral medication Oseltamivir. Healthcare professionals are being trained on the early detection of ILI and SARI, as well as on case management procedures. This proactive approach aims to minimise the impact of the flu this season.

Private healthcare providers are urged to adhere to state protocols for screening, testing, and treating H1N1 cases. They are also required to compulsorily report all cases to the relevant authorities through the IHIP system. In addition, infection prevention measures have been bolstered across various healthcare settings.

The department is actively promoting public awareness about respiratory hygiene, suitable cough etiquette, and hand washing techniques through multiple media channels. Public health guidelines emphasise personal responsibility in preventing the spread of influenza by taking proper precautions.

Members of the community are encouraged to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and to wash their hands frequently. Other recommendations include drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding touching the face, and steering clear of crowded areas if symptoms are present. The Health Department has urged the public not to panic and to consult the nearest government health facility should any symptoms arise.
