Karnataka Minister MB Patil has made serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the party of employing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department to intimidate Congress leaders. Patil asserts that these operations predominantly target opposition politicians. He claims that the BJP uses these tactics to frighten leaders into switching allegiance to their party.

He referenced the cases of Maharashtra leaders, late Ajit Pawar and Ashok Chavan, suggesting that their experiences exemplify the BJP’s alleged strategy of coercion through governmental agencies. This narrative reinforces the notion that certain political moves are not merely about legal accountability but could be part of a broader political strategy.

Comments on Satish Jarkiholi’s Allegations

The discourse surrounding Minister Satish Jarkiholi also continued, focusing on allegations regarding investments in South Africa. Patil clarified that while Jarkiholi conducted an inspection for potential investments, he had not executed any transactions to date. This statement aimed to quell speculation and confirm that no financial wrongdoing had occurred, at least as per Jarkiholi’s reports.

Responding to whether he himself might face an ED raid in the future, Patil remarked, “Anyone can come,” indicating his understanding of the current political climate and acknowledging the potential threat posed by such investigations. This statement illustrates the pervasive fear among opposition leaders regarding the possibility of being targeted in politically motivated raids.

Also addressing the matter, Karnataka Minister UT Khader joined the conversation, asserting on Sunday that the BJP is engaged in “target politics” through the conduct of ED raids, particularly in the context of the investigation involving Congress leader Satish Jarkiholi. He claimed that the majority of such actions are specifically aimed at Congress members rather than being impartial investigations.

Search Operations by Enforcement Directorate

The backdrop for these accusations includes a recent series of searches carried out by the Enforcement Directorate. On September 13, the agency conducted searches at multiple properties linked to Karnataka PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, including his residence and that of his daughter, Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Jarkiholi. These operations extended to 18 locations, encompassing the premises of the minister’s brother-in-law, Y Manjunath, as well.

According to the ED, the investigations are not related to the existing excise case involving Manjunath, but rather pertain to a separate alleged money laundering case against Jarkiholi. These searches were initiated based on collected intelligence and were conducted with the cooperation of security personnel. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure thorough investigations under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

In response to these developments, Khader affirmed that most cases arising from ED actions do not lead to convictions. He stated, “98 per cent of ED raids are happening only on Congress leaders,” and noted that the majority of these investigations ultimately do not result in punitive measures. Despite the pressures faced, Khader expressed a commitment to unity among Congress leaders, stating that the party remains cohesive in the face of perceived smear campaigns.
