Despite being unable to attend in person due to inclement weather, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday virtually addressed an administrative programme in Kalimpong, unveiling a wide-ranging development roadmap for the hill district. The announcements focused on healthcare expansion, administrative transparency, anti-corruption measures, and disaster preparedness.

In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure, the Chief Minister confirmed that the long-awaited medical college for Kalimpong is moving ahead. He stated that instructions have already been issued to complete the financial approval process and assured that the Bhoomi Pujan for the project will take place during his next visit to the hills.

He also highlighted progress under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, revealing that out of a target of 2.18 lakh beneficiaries in the district, over 1.15 lakh cards have already been activated. Those left out will be covered under the state-run Mukhyamantri Swasthya Bima Yojana, ensuring free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh.

GTA administration under scanner

Addressing governance in the hills, Adhikari announced that IAS officer Mohanty has been appointed as the administrator of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) following recent resignations. He emphasised that development work would be expedited in coordination with elected representatives.

Taking a firm stance against corruption, the Chief Minister warned of strict action in cases related to GTA teacher recruitment, the AMRUT water project, and funds allocated to various development boards. He stated that an inquiry committee led by retired Justice Biswajit Basu is already investigating the matter.

“Those who have looted public funds will face FIRs, arrests, and recovery. No one will be spared,” he asserted.

Rs 254 Cr disaster relief and rehabilitation measures

With landslides affecting parts of the hills and neighbouring Nepal, the state government has sanctioned Rs 254 crore as a disaster relief fund. Senior officials, including Principal Secretary Rajesh Sinha, have been deployed on the ground to monitor preparedness.

Additionally, 73 families affected by the October 2025 landslides will receive Rs 3 lakh each as further financial assistance, reinforcing the government’s rehabilitation efforts.

The Chief Minister announced the rollout of several welfare measures aimed at improving livelihoods in the hills:

• Rs 3,000 monthly assistance to 15,000 women under the Annapurna Yojana has begun.

• Pension for widows and senior citizens increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500.

• Assurance of 125 days of guaranteed employment in both rural and urban areas.

• Expansion of benefits under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

He also confirmed that 8,325 land-owning homeless families in Kalimpong will receive houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana within the next six months.

Focus on long-term stability and growth

Referring to recent initiatives by Union Home Minister Amit Shah aimed at resolving political issues in the hills, Adhikari stressed the importance of sustained peace and development. He reiterated the government’s commitment to holistic progress, from tea gardens to tourism.

“Every promise made to the people of the hills will be kept. The momentum of development will continue across all sectors,” the Chief Minister said.

The announcements signal a comprehensive push to strengthen infrastructure, governance, and welfare delivery in Kalimpong, positioning the region for long-term stability and growth.
