Union Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, recently charged the Opposition with intentionally obstructing parliamentary proceedings. He claimed that the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is ready and willing to discuss all issues, asserting that the Opposition has not presented any significant matters for discussion. During his address in the Rajya Sabha, Nadda remarked that the Opposition had prioritised disruption since the commencement of the Monsoon Session.

Nadda articulated that the Opposition’s approach has been counterproductive, stating, “Their entire focus has been on disrupting and obstructing the proceedings of the House rather than facilitating its function.” He further suggested that the Opposition lacks substantial issues to raise, alleging a tendency to frequently alter their demands and focus.

The Minister expressed his concern over the ongoing situation, stating, “It is their habit to constantly shift the goalposts.” This statement highlights what he perceives as the Opposition’s lack of consistency in their stance. Nadda emphasised the government’s openness to dialogue in Parliament, contrasting it with the Opposition’s alleged reluctance to engage in meaningful discussions.

Government’s Readiness for Discussions

In his remarks, JP Nadda underscored that the Modi administration has consistently shown willingness to discuss all matters in Parliament. He stated, “The government is prepared to discuss every issue—not just in this session but in all previous sessions.” He iterated that the Opposition often finds themselves embarrassed during discussions, as they lack substantive points to present.

Addressing the Parliament’s agenda for the day, Nadda pointed out that a discussion was scheduled in the Rajya Sabha, initiated by Minister Jitendra Singh at 2 PM. He condemned the repeated shift in the Opposition’s demands, stressing that this behaviour distracts from critical talks. “I strongly condemn the Opposition’s conduct,” he added, reiterating the government’s readiness to discuss any pressing matter.

Following his statements, members of the Opposition staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha, reflecting their discontent with Nadda’s accusations. This protest coincided with ongoing Opposition demonstrations concerning the alleged police action against student protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20.

Ongoing Protests by Opposition Parties

The Opposition has been vocal about their grievances regarding police actions during recent protests, demanding accountability from the government. They have sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in light of these events and have called for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament regarding the situation.

Earlier on the same day, several members from parties within the INDIA alliance protested in the Makar Dwar area of the Parliament complex, holding placards asking for accountability on the alleged police actions. This aligns with the broader context of heightened tensions in Parliament regarding various national issues.

In a related development, the Lok Sabha faced adjournment until 2 PM amid disruptions triggered by remarks from Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. His comments concerning alleged police firing during the July 20 protests further emphasised the escalating tensions between the ruling party and the Opposition.
