Jammu and Kashmir: Construction of Rs 25 Crore Critical Care Block to Enhance Healthcare in Poonch

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jammu and Kashmir is set to improve its healthcare services with the ongoing construction of the Prime Minister Critical Care Block in Poonch district. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance critical healthcare facilities in the area, as stated by local authorities.

The Superintendent of District Hospital, Poonch, Shafiq Ahmed, confirmed that the project has a budget of Rs 25 crore and aims to provide advanced medical infrastructure for patients in need of specialized care.

Details of the Critical Care Block

According to Ahmed, the construction of this facility is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed shortly. The Critical Care Block will incorporate modern medical equipment and include a public healthcare lab, positioning it as an integrated unit designed to serve the community more effectively. This project is indicative of a significant step toward fortifying the healthcare system in the Poonch area, ensuring that residents have access to essential medical services.

Overview of the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission

This initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), launched in 2021. The mission stands as one of the largest nationwide programs in India, aiming to construct a resilient and accessible public health system. PM-ABHIM focuses on enhancing healthcare infrastructure from the grassroots level up to the district level.

This includes the establishment and upgrading of various health facilities, such as Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), Block Public Health Units, Integrated District Public Health Labs, and Critical Care Hospital Blocks in every district across the country.

Addressing Healthcare Service Gaps

The facilities created under PM-ABHIM are intended to bridge existing gaps in health service delivery and ensure that comprehensive primary, secondary, and critical care is available closer to local communities. As part of its objectives, the mission emphasizes preparedness for pandemics and disasters. It aims to expand an IT-based, real-time disease surveillance network that integrates laboratories at various levels—from block to national— to enhance the detection, investigation, and prevention of disease outbreaks.

Focus on Research and Urban Health Centers

In addition to its primary goals, PM-ABHIM promotes health research and innovation surrounding infectious diseases, including COVID-19. The mission adopts a One Health approach, recognizing the connection between human, animal, and environmental health.

Furthermore, it emphasizes addressing critical health gaps in both urban and rural settings by establishing Urban Health and Wellness Centres in slum areas and converting Sub-Centres into AAMs. These initiatives collectively aim to create a robust health ecosystem capable of effectively responding to future healthcare challenges while ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens in India.
