US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is contemplating renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” due to escalating trade tensions with Canada. This statement follows recent tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods, amounting to 50 per cent on $20 billion worth of products.

The potential name change is reminiscent of Trump’s previous action last year, where he employed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. In his social media post, Trump stated that the United States is “giving serious consideration” to this name change, suggesting a diminished expectation for future business interactions with Ontario.
