INS Sudarshini Initiates Historic Indian Naval Visit to Canary Islands

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Navy’s sail training ship, INS Sudarshini, marked a significant milestone by arriving at Las Palmas on April 23, 2026. This visit is the first-ever port call by an Indian naval vessel to the Canary Islands, showcasing the expanding reach of the Indian Navy in international waters.

INS Sudarshini’s arrival forms part of its ongoing transoceanic deployment under the initiative known as Lokayan 26. This noteworthy visit serves as a crucial stop before the vessel embarks on its trans-Atlantic journey, further emphasising the Indian Navy’s global maritime presence.

The Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini is scheduled to engage in professional discussions with officials from the Spanish Navy. These interactions are expected to enhance cooperation and strengthen ties between the two navies.

Community Engagement and Bilateral Relations

During its stay, the ship will open its doors to visitors, including members of the local Spanish community and the Indian diaspora. This initiative aims to foster closer people-to-people connections and promote cultural exchange during the ship’s historic visit.

The engagement is part of a larger effort by the Indian Navy to expand its maritime diplomacy. INS Sudarshini’s stopover is not just a military event; it reflects a commitment to build mutual understanding and collaboration with foreign naval forces.

This visit to the Canary Islands highlights the growing maritime engagement between India and Spain, underscoring a shared interest in expanding naval relationships. The active participation of local communities is seen as beneficial for both nations in cultivating friendships at a grassroots level.

Previous Journey and Future Plans

INS Sudarshini commenced its voyage from Kochi in January 2026. Since then, the vessel has made previous port calls in several countries, including Oman, Egypt, Malta, France, and Morocco. Each visit has contributed to promoting the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates as ‘the world is one family.’

After the current stop at the Canary Islands, INS Sudarshini is scheduled to proceed on a trans-Atlantic voyage. The ship will participate in Sail 250 events, commemorating significant milestones at various ports in the United States, coinciding with the 250th Independence Day celebrations of the country.

This multinational presence during the Sail 250 events will not only celebrate American history but also highlight the role of Indian naval forces in fostering international friendships and maritime cooperation.
