Indian Embassy Issues Travel Advisory for South Korea’s Jeju Island Following Recent Detention Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Embassy in Seoul has released a travel advisory for Indian citizens planning to visit Jeju Island, South Korea, in light of recent events involving content creator Sachin Awasthi. On Tuesday, the Embassy advised travelers to exercise heightened caution, citing reported incidents where Indian visitors faced entry denials or were repatriated upon attempting to enter Jeju Island under the visa waiver scheme.

Mandatory Documentation for Travelers

The advisory emphasized the importance of adhering to specific entry requirements. Visitors are urged to familiarize themselves with the necessary documents before traveling. Entry under the Jeju visa waiver is intended solely for short-term tourism. The Embassy clearly stated that the final decision on entry is made exclusively by immigration authorities at Jeju International Airport, in accordance with South Korean laws. It reiterated that the visa waiver does not assure entry into the country.

Documentation Requirements Detailed

Travelers are required to possess several mandatory documents, including confirmed return air tickets, hotel reservations for the duration of their stay, a detailed day-wise travel itinerary, proof of sufficient funds, a passport with at least six months of validity, travel insurance, and contact information for their accommodation. The Embassy cautioned that individuals who fail to articulate a clear travel plan could face denial of entry.

Financial Preparedness and Immigration Interviews

The advisory underscored the necessity of financial readiness, urging travelers to demonstrate adequate financial means for their entire stay, covering daily expenses, lodging costs, and transportation arrangements. Immigration officials may conduct interviews upon arrival, and it is recommended that travelers respond honestly and consistently, while maintaining a calm demeanor.

Clarification on Travel Restrictions

Indian nationals should be aware that the Jeju visa waiver does not authorize travel to mainland South Korea. Any attempt to leave Jeju without the appropriate visa is regarded as illegal. Violations such as overstaying or engaging in unauthorized activities may lead to future travel bans. In cases where entry is refused, travelers will be returned on the next available flight, potentially requiring a temporary stay in a holding facility.

Background on Sachin Awasthi’s Detention

The advisory follows the detention of Sachin Awasthi, who, along with his wife, was held for 38 hours on Jeju Island after being denied entry. Awasthi publicly shared his experience of being confined in a detention center and subsequently compelled to purchase a costly return ticket. He stated, “I am not sharing this for sympathy or drama. Immigration decisions are their authority. But they did not have any right to treat us like criminals.”

Overview of Jeju’s Visa Waiver Program

Jeju Island is one of three self-governing provinces in South Korea featuring a specialized visa-free entry program for international visitors. Indian travelers can enter without a visa only if they arrive directly from another foreign country. Entry into Jeju via mainland South Korea necessitates obtaining a visa beforehand.
